Hi I am SJ

I am new here, and looking for some diet suggestions.

I have been doing the Cambridge diet now for 3 months and lost 4+stone but have come off it quite abruptly as my hair was falling out (and still is! :( ) but obviously I want to continue to lose weight, I would like to lose approx. 3stone to reach my target of 10stone. I am quite active, I aim to go to gym three times a week, don’t always make it but I do try and its always at least once, I want do more running so I run 5k every time I go to gym, and some of my other hobbies are quite active i.e. walking, rock climbing, but I do have an office job of sitting on *kitten* all day.

I would say my problem with food is using it for cheering up when I am down or when I happy I am quite social so alcohol and dinners out can be often.

I have been doing the intermittent fasting from the BBC documentary and doing alternate days of 500 cals and then keeping feed days at 2000 cals, not sure that is going to work for me, I find it too easy to go over the 2000 cals and don’t feel in control also coming from 500 cals a day am not sure it will actually work in losing weight, I weigh in tonight to see if it has done anything though.

So suggestions of suitable diets would be great and new friends etc would be great too :)

I suggest finding something you like to do, and works for you.

Dieting usually doesn't work very well. Too many people will either give up before they reach their goals, or when they reach their goals, stop, and go back to the lifestyle they lived that made them fat, in the first place, usually putting all the weight back on, and more. You need to do something that works for your life. Find exercises you like to do. Find foods that are healthy that you like to eat. Once a week, a binge meal can be okay, but if your "social meals, and drinks" happen every day, you will have a hard time sticking to anything. If you can order a healthy meal off menu, and limit your alcohol, or stick with water for most of your social gatherings you will find yourself more successful in losing weight, and keeping it off.

Good luck in whatever you choose to do.

I would agree with the person above me. If you are struggling with IF maybe try something else? I usually suggest something like this for weightloss as it seems to be manageable and a little less restricting.

I would suggest not trying to lose more than 1 pound per week.

I would cut your dietary fats to 20% of your daily intake.
    Reduce your carbohydrates by 15%
And up your protein to about a gram per pound.

This will allow you to hold onto your lean muscle and also not feel the exhaustion associated with low carb dieting.

Your carbs should be low GI and your fats should be healthy fats from nuts, seeds, and fish. I would suggest trimming saturated and hydrogentated fats from your diet.

Eat plenty of fruit and veg. They contain fibre which slows down the emptying of food from your stomach which will allow you to feel fuller longer.

Those are just some suggestions :)

First things first. Throw out the word "diet". Successful and sustainable weight loss is a lifestyle change - it's not something you can do for 6 months and expect to keep the weight off when you return to old habits. Take little steps that you can keep up for life, rather than big leaps that you have to stop after a few months.

You have identified a habit that is keeping you from your goals - you are an emotional eater and because of it, you eat when you are not hungry. That's a good first step! Your next step is to get in control of that. You need to deal with this issue before you will feel in control of whatever eating method you adapt.

You are not alone in this by a long shot. There are a great number of support groups for this problem here on MFP with a lot of people you can talk to about how to deal with these feelings without reaching for food. Make some connections, find a solution that works for you, and I guarantee everything will get so much easier from there.

I wish you the best in your endeavors to be the best you can be. :flowerforyou:
  • Thanks for the replies

I agree with what people saying but for me I can’t seem to remember a time when I wasn’t having 3 sachets day I don’t have the baseline to then reduce intake by 20% etc, whatever I do am going to be increasing it? If that makes sense or I need a baseline to work from

Long term I will be having healthy diet and regular exercise but I feel I need to work my way UP to that slowly and as much as Cambridge worked for me, it has not taught me how to eat better etc
  • Well as I anticipated I had gained 4lbs, I think i am just going to calories count to 1200 a day, unless anyone has any better suggestions?
