Is pre-seasoned chicken bad for you?

I would usually buy fresh boneless skinless chicken breasts when they went on sale, but lately the best sale I've been finding is 3.99/lb (3.49/lb if I'm REALLY lucky)...

I found some pre-seasoned boneless skinless chicken breasts on sale for 1.69/lb this week, bought some and have used them for dinner and lunch a number of times already. Can't beat the price BUT...

I didn't realise at the time that they were pre-seasoned, which pretty much means salted. I am just curious as to whether I'm doing more harm than good buying this new type? Package info says it has 336mg sodium per 1/2 breast.

Thanks for any information. We are on a very tight budget, which is the reason for the switch.

I think its fine in moderation. Just like any thing, too much salt can be bad. I personally know that salt makes me retain a lot of water making it harder for me to shed much needed lbs. Overall, its a preference but you should prpbabaly watch salt consumption.

    Good luck!

Have you tried the bags of frozen chicken breast, they have them at wal-mart and Sams has a big bag for alot less money. They have all kinds some with .ribs, tenders..I find them real easy to cook with I just take a few out at a time and cook them with something in the crock pot.
  • These are the same idea, they're frozen chicken breasts but they say "pre-seasoned" which I think those other frozen ones do too.. At 1.69/lb I get roughly 5 or 6 breasts for $4-$5.50 so not a bad price at all. I think I will just have to lower my salt intake in other areas to make up for when I have a piece of chicken or something.

What seasonings are there? You had mentioned a lot of salt, but are there preservatives and a bunch of other nastiness in there?

I honestly wouldn't be too worried about it as you seem to know your stuff. Just drink some extra water to help flush out the excess sodium.
  • It's boneless skinless chicken breasts, but instead of being fresh they are already frozen. I am going to guess it's not incredibly bad because I'm sure many people buy them that way. I had never bought them like that before so I was worried I was cancelling out the good of the chicken with the bad of the salt.

They're just plain breasts, they don't have any flavour until I add garlic etc. So I think the pre-seasoned part is just plain and simple salt.

I am going to up my water intake on the days I eat the chicken though, thanks!
