I am not one to use any kind of artificial sweetener. However, my neighbor who just moved gave me a huge bag of Splenda when she left. Anyway today as I was sitting here I decided I wanted to have a cup of my green tea. I like mine sweetened though and I already have everything logged into my food diary and didn't want to go over.

I went to the pantry and brought out the Splenda...ok, it can't be too bad right? It doesnt contain Aspartame which is my main concern with artificial sweeteners anyway. It has 0 everything so I could sweeten my tea and not go over on anything. When I put a spoonful in my cup it disolved immediately, even fizzing a little. I thought that was weird. So I came over to my computer and looked it up. DISGUSTING!!

If you use SPLENDA or are thinking about trying it please check this out first. http://www.truthaboutsplenda.com/index.html

Does anyone have any natural sweeteners that they use besides sugar?

I use purevia...and splenda. I read the link and I agree, it is not the most appealing information, but I use it sparingly so I probably wont banish it from my food pantry. At any rate, thank you for sharing and making us aware of the "possible" concerns.

I had a hard time finding one too. Sun crystals is one that I found that was all natural, with only 5 calories per packet (you only need one really). Its not too bad, it still has that "fake sugar" taste to me, I don't know, I like my good old sugar. I don't care how many calories I have, I sacrifice elsewhere so I can enjoy my tea! It's scary to find out what is put in some of the diet foods, pretty gross actually. I say If you want something, especially something as small as a tsp. or 2 of sugar go for it, so what, it's a few more minutes at the gym, or cutting calories somewhere else....

I checked out that "Truth about Splenda" site. If you click on the Legal link at the bottom of the page you find out that the site is sponsored by the Sugar Association. Just thought I'd mention that...

I used to drink Crystal Light, because I didn't like water, and I even gave it to my 2yr old daughter so she wasn't exposed to all the ridiculous amounts of sugar in fruit juices. Then I started having numbness and tingling in my hands and feet. I ignored it for a while, as I think all working mothers do....no time to worry about "silly things like that".

Let me add that I am and have been a nurse for more than 10 yrs. In any case, a coworker mentioned to me that she had similar and even worse symptoms symptoms and completely stopped using all artificial sweeteners(ie. splenda, equal, sweet-n-low) and her symptoms went away. So I read about the nastiness that they put in the aforementioned sweeteners and about had a heart attack. I cut them out and could feel my big toe again...lol. I missed that little guy...:-)

I only use sugar now, and half my daughter's juice with water, or just give her plain filtered water now. I haven't tried the new sweeteners out there, like Truvia etc. but I think I will stick with small amounts of the natural stuff!!!

i use steviea pwdr or sun crystals (mostly cause i can't take the packets with me) and evaperated cane juice to sweet most items - we do still use white suger to sweeten our tea but i only use 1 cup per gallon so it isn't as bad as it used to be.

Crystal light contains aspertame, not splenda, from what I saw on the official Kraft website.

    Ditto on the Stevia.

ALSO- there's this honey type of stuff called Agave Nectar. It's juice from the cactus plant and does NOT effect blood sugar levels, so it's totally G.I friendly. I would highly reccomend this for green tea.

    :)
  • Be careful with any artificial sweetener. Just because something is natural does not mean it is good for the body. At one time splenda was the number choice for sweeteners, as time goes on and more research is done with stevia and others, side effects could show up. I was reading an article on stevia from webmd that early research shows that stevia could lower sperm count in men and may even cause sterility. What I am saying is that over time some of these "natural" sweeteners could be less healthy than we think.
