I have a small confession to make... I WAS doing pretty well with MFP... logging all the time, even if I did go way over my calorie intact... but something is holding me back. I feel almost that I dont care if I go into the red. :-/ I need a bit of discipline!

My friend is doing the Rosemary Colney plan and has lost 9lbs in two weeks (granted she is a bit bigger then me.) I am tempted on starting it! What do people think?

I used to be a member of Rosemary Conley (my mum still is). It was her class that recommended using this site (mfp)!!!! I have found that I dont want to go over my calories because I have lots of friends on here. I have my diary open so anyone can view it if they want to. Everyone is doing so well that I feel like i would let everyone else down if i went over or ate something really bad.

They are also encouraging me to keep up with exercising. I have found mfp works much better for me than any other website or class I have tried before, but everyone is different.

So would you say that the class is a good thing? Just to get one back into the right frame of mind?

Never heard of it, and if you don't mind a bit of constructive criticism, I would avoid doing anything "fad diet" ish or the like. I know it is hard to work within the guidelines of MFP calorie recommendations, sometimes- but by educating yourself on the different varieties of healthier foods out there, and getting yourself active a bit more (to widen that calorie margin up - move to eat!) and just stick to it for a while. Set yourself up a weekly, or daily plan and just stick it out, change WILL happen.

Anything "fad" or "trendy" as far as "diets" are concerned generally work in the brief short run, but it isn't maintainable in the long term, like.. for the rest of your life. If you want long lasting results, a good food education (read the forums, google research, work with a dietitian if available) and relearning how to keep yourself motivated and active are much more effective.

Just my 2 cents. Take it or leave it :)

I've been attending the Rosemary Conley classes for a couple of years now and I think they really work - the diet is fairly sensible so you're unlikely to find yourself starving hungry and you get a starters kit which gives you meal ideas etc for each week which really helps to start with.

At my class the instructor also gives out certificates for "slimmer of the week" and to commemorate reaching your milestones (for example losing an entire stone) and I find this really motivating.

I'd suggest if you do join the classes you do the excersize classes too - don't just weigh and go. The aerobics really helps speed up weight loss (and is great for general fitness) and whilst your waiting for everyone to weigh in it's easy to make new friends and get some encouragement.

Edit: Just to add some notes on the diet - it's a fairly simple idea; basically they work out a daily calorie allowance for you (mine's 1400 which is what MFP picked too) and you can pick any foods up to that limit as long as they are less than 5% fat. After the first few weeks you also get a "treat" allowance of 200 calories which you can choose to eat as high fat foods (so you can have a glass of wine, a chocolate bar etc). They break that down into meals and snacks and give you lots of recipe suggestions etc but that's what it basically boils down to - in reality it's just common sense, eat less calories of low fat food.

I think my main reason for wanting to do it is to get a better idea of what a portion size actually is! Not to mention the fact that the groups will give me a bit of discipline (for a while.)

My calorie allowance is set at around 1,400 at the moment on here but I think that maybe I'm not doing it properly... because I don't know what portion sizes I'm having... if you see what I mean.

Might just buy the plan and do it at home? I dunno. :-/

Sounds like what MFP teaches. And it's free.

But I can understand wanting the support group, I guess.

Don't do it just because your friend lost 9 pounds in 2 weeks. The first couple of weeks of any diet plan - good or bad - is often a better indicator of how much water weight the individual was able to lose than how well the diet really worked.

I did Rosemary Conley for years and years, lost a ton and slowly put it back on again while attending classes (all my own fault). The diet is very sensible and the class incorporates about 40 minutes of exercise to do at whatever level you feel comfortable with.

I'm doing much better on here so far as the support is constant, and it's free, which is a HUGE plus. When it comes down to it, losing weight boils down to YOU eating less and YOU moving more. MFP is a tool to help log, motivate and track those things but no programme will work unless YOU follow the rules.

In your shoes I'd stay on here for nothing, and save your £5+ for exercise classes - you'll get more jumping up and down per £ spent.

The portion size thing is easy if you have some kitchen scales that will measure down to a quarter of an ounce/5 grams. Measure out your foods BEFORE you eat them so that you can do a quick switcheroo if you log what you were going to have and find it is more calories than you meant to eat.

Edited to add - you may find this guide to portion sizes useful

Hmm the more people talk about it, the more I think that maybe I shouldnt. Spending £6 a week just to try and get myself into the right mindset is a bit of a waste... when really MFP is teaching you exactly the same!

I dunno. :( Just feel so discouraged at the moment.
