Winter is fast approaching and I'm curious about running in the morning!

I usually run at 530 am so I'm home before dh and the kiddos are up its staying darker later so I have had to find some alternate and lit up roots to my regular paths because of coyotes, mountain lions and bob cats (hello rocky mountains!) but winter here is Uhm interesting as in super cold at dawn/dusk and 60s mid day (dh works and I have a three year old at home so I can't run at noon) if you have a similar situation when do you run?! I'm considering afternoon on the days he's home early and I don't know when he works late orrrr getting a treadmill for the basement..wwyd?

    Four things.......

    1) proper clothing for colder weather running - think layers
    2) a "bear bell" on your shoe laces
    3) repellent (pepper spray) just in case
    4) Pezl (or similar) LED headlamp to light up the trail

and you should be good to go. I have a similar situation without the predators (we have the occasional black bear sighting but they're pretty shy - the scariest thing I usually need to worry about are skunks) and it gets cold in the winter (-35°C in Jan & Feb)

The treadmill is an option but if you're accustomed to enjoying running outside (and I'm sure the scenery is magnificent) treadmills can get old very quickly. If you do buy one get a good quality one, it'll be a few more $$ but you'll still be using it in a few years.

Is finding a local gym an option? Treadmills are fine to maintain, but you really do get a signficantly better workout and experience running outside, at least in my opinion.

The reason I suggest a gym is because you may find yourself meeting people like on MFP, who will provide you with additional support and encouragement.

The best we have is a rec center and everyone is pretty anti social myself included I hate running with other  I love the view I have twinkly stars and then a gorgeous view of the Rockies as the sun comes up :) the treadmill would be for blizzards and days when dh isn't home until after dark. A bear bell would be helpful with bob cats but not mountain lions and coyotes here could care less about that they are out for blood and attack runners regularly :( pepper spray is great idea though!! I just ordered a long sleeve running shirt and have long pants :)

Everyone on MFP is packing heat on their runs, why aren't you? ;)

I need a license and I'm kinda scared I may shoot myself in the foot while pissing myself because of the mountain lion ;)
