Weight is fluctuating - why??

I lost 8 lbs in the first month, and this last week, I've put on a pound and a half. I haven't done anything any differently and am still busting my butt. I feel really discouraged about this -- anyone have words of advice or similar stories?

Usually, a pretty stock answer to this is 'water weight'
If your goal is to lose 1-2lbs per week, it's really difficult to make the distinction between fat loss/gain and water retention in a week. Your weight can fluctuate by 2-3lbs per day just because of how much water you're holding onto.
Also, if you're only in the first week of your second month, your body might have caught on to the fact that it's not getting as much food, or that you're exercising more. It isn't as willing to dip into your fat stores for energy. It's going to use what it's getting used to getting.
Don't get discouraged. Just keep going. Some months you'll plateau, some months you'll lose more than you expected. Just keep with a healthy routine, and it'll all come off eventually.0 -
It's absolutely normal for your weight to fluctuate. Morning to evening is usually 2lbs for me. I generally fluctuate 4 or 5 pounds depending on hydration. They recommend weighing once a week, but I weigh everyday. Keep with program log everyday, exercise and you will lose weight.0

Its normal. My afternoon weight fluctuates 5-6 lbs from my morning weight.0
