Protein bars/shakes for non-exercise junkies?

I have a question, the protein shakes like muscle milk, and pure protein and stuff like that, are they JUST for after a really strenuous workout? Or can I use them as a meal replacement? Will they make me fat if I eat/ drink them when I have not done a really hard workout?

they are food. and do nothing more than other foods. 200cal of milk and shake to your body is treated the same as 200 cal of *****en and veggies. (assuming same macro breakdown)

So, do you think it would be OK for me to drink say, muscle milk, as a meal/protein supliment, even if I never do a hard core workout?

You'll want to look at the calories, fat, carbs, and protein level just like any other food. Many of these bars are intended for those that are burning off the fuel via some intense exercising. Typically not geared for those of us that aren't quite at that level. I recommend EAS Carb Control or even Atkins bars if you're looking for a decent protein bar within more reasonable calorie or carb limits.

Some fitness gurus might chime in with more specific advice on those particular bars. Give it some time :-)

Yeah, they are not going to make you fat.

It is good to get in your daily protein, and a shake is a great way to do that... especially if you are on the go.

www.dashingdish.com has some great recipes for protein shakes and bars.

I use Designer Whey Protein Powder (vanilla) and one full scoop (and its a big scoop) is only 100 calories. I use 40 calorie almond milk and for 140-180 calories it is really good. I get it at trader joes.

Be careful because some are full of sugar and too many calories, in my opinion.
