How to build muscle, but still lose "weight"?

Hello, all!
I'm happy to say that I'm getting close to my fitness and weight loss goals, thanks in part to this site and all the helpful people on it! :D

However, I still want to build a little more muscle as I continue to drop weight. (in Hollywood terms, I want to "TONE UP", much as I hate that term, because it is inaccurate; you cannot TONE a muscle, building muscle is what gets you that "fit" look)

anyhow, whenever I read up on building muscle, I am advised to eat a surplus of calories! How am I supposed to continue losing fat, when I am eating more calories than my activities require? D: Some help would be much appreciated! Right now I'm at 1500 net daily and I do strength exercises (squats, russian twists, ect) several times per week :)

You either do one or the other.

When putting on muscle you will gain some fat. The amount of fat is up to you. You can eat in modest surplus and add quality weight OR you can pig out everyday, eating everything in site. You will build muscle with both choices, but you will gain a larger amount of fat with option #2.

Get ready for a sh* storm in this thread.

That creepy doll you are holding looks magical. He might be able to make it work. If so, please let me borrow him.

Nope it is not necessary to eat "extra". You only need to eat enough. I built muscle while on a significant calorie deficit. Eating more to gain muscle is a myth. I have books with research to back it up. How I did it here --> http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/740340-i-lost-60-lbs-at-age-51-anyone-can-any-workout
