Barefoot runners

I've been a runner since I ran cross country in middle school.
I couldn't join cross country in high school because the coach was afraid I would get hit by a car because I was visually impaired.
No one wanted to run with me at my pace. So I never joined the team.
I ran my 1st 5k the summer before high school. It was invigorating.
People tell me that I can't run because I'm a bit heavier.
But I really enjoy running.
My last 5k was 43:20. This was in November 2011.
Anyway, any of you run barefoot? if so, do you wear barefoot running shoes? Recommend any brands?
Tips?

You shouldn't let anyone tell you that you can't run. If you enjoy it definitely do it.

I have used the Nike Free in the past and I enjoyed it. It's the only one I have experience with so it's the only one I can recommend.

Regardless of which brand you go with keep in mind that you will be taxing your feet in ways that they are not use to. You have to strengthen them like anything else so you will need to ease them into a routine of running with barefoot shoes.

    Yes

No. I only do it on my treadmill indoors at home. I'll slip on a pair of socks sometimes as the treadmill belt can get warm over longer periods of time.

    Tips?
Start slow and gradually increase your distance. I haven't tried them, but I know there are some running clubs in my area that are for "all ages and ability groups" on specific days (even walkers). They run on one of the local beaches. If there is a group like them in your area, that might be a place to start if you need someone to help you watch for obstacles.

Do you have a dog that could go with you too? Would a well trained dog help even it wasn't an official seeing-eye dog?

    I *just* started barefoot running.
I wear socks with rubber bottoms on the treadmill (think yoga or hospital socks) and go completely barefoot when I run around the football field
I wear Brooks Pure Connect when I run in the city (minimalist shoes)
I'm also looking for some "barefoot" runners, like VFFs (but I hate things between my toes lol).
    Feel free to add me!
