Daily Reminder ….NSV

I started my current job about 2 months before I decided to start living a healthier life. The attire is professional wardrobe required, at the time my wardrobe was limited and I had to buy all new, super sized clothes – depressing (and a motivator). Fast forward many months into my progress and none of these new clothes fit at all or were extremely huge.

So, there’s another guy at work here, we’ll say he is large. He’s a nice guy, does a LOT of volunteer work but is also obviously financially strapped and lacking in the wardrobe department. Instead of donating my stuff to Goodwill or something I managed to awkwardly (and privately) ask him if he would take the clothes to donate to his Church but with the promise that he would take a look at the stuff first for himself to keep. Good deed, right? No, I’m not going for the pat on the back. He wears a lot of the clothes often. I always thought that he was waaaaay bigger than me. Apparently not. All this stuff fits him fine. It’s hard for me to believe that I was actually that large. It’s also a reminder that I never I want to go back there again.

It’s weird sometimes seeing him wear the stuff. It makes me feel good that he’s able to get use out of it and also a great, physical reminder that’s about where I started, much better comparison than seeing a picture. It also makes me uneasy knowing that I actually was that big…..but that’s a story for another day.

Aww that's really quite touching. Who knows you might even inspire him to get healthy too. Good for you :)
  • Sorry, I was busy getting rid of all the damn crickets.
Very noble thing to do. I am sure he appreciates it a lot! and may even be a bit motivated that you went from where he is, to where you are now.
So you may have done more good than you originally thought :)

Visual representation helps us out the most. Which is where the number on the scale addiction stems from, I am sure.

Seeing yourself through and outsiders eyes, does help us gain a better perspective of things. :) I, for one, know I wish I could experience that myself. Totally got where you are coming from!

I get the reverse ... bought some new shorts at the shops a couple of weeks ago (tried on one pair, bought three), and got a pair out to wear them for the first time today. My first thought was "dammit, must have grabbed a different size than I tried on, these are way too small". Checked the label - yep, same size ... put them on - they fit perfectly. I guess it takes time to get your head around it.

I think this was very kind of you...we all remember how expensive plus size clothes are, especially for the work place.

I keep quietly thinking to myself that I need to find someone who recently put on a lot of weight that i can swap wardrobes with.

What you did was very kind. First in recognizing the need and then in the offer. Most people don't pay that close of attention to the people around them.

I constantly look at guys my age and notice how big so many of them are. I try not to look at them in a negative way because I know how they got there, I was them for so long. But it is a good reminder of why I changed my lifestyle.

The other thing I do that acts as a good reminder is to pick up something that weighs what I have lost and think how'd you like to carry that around all day every day.

Is that why you're holding the water container in your profile pic? I thought it was a bit over the top for a drink bottle. :P

that is awesome. a few of us mfp gals talked about swapping clothes since i'm trailing one of my local friends in weight loss, and i plan on giving my mom some of my nicer things that dont fit since she is working her way down too. why waste money on perfectly good clothes right?

Most of us don't have a daily reminder; you are fortunate in that regard, because it is easy to make excuses for ourselves. It was also a considerate gesture to offer the clothes to your friend in a diplomatic manner. I'm sure he appreciates them. Well done on both counts.

That is a great selfless act! I did something similar with a co-worker. Unfortunately, she can no longer wear anymore of my hand me downs...so now Goodwill gets them!

I think guys don't share clothes as well or easily as women. I'd be open to all offers at this point, lol.
