Entering a race on your own?

A few months ago, myself and some of my co-workers decided we'd enter a 10K run/military assault course thing that is happening in October (a bit like a mini Tough Mudder!). At that point I couldn't run any real distance so added running into my exercise program - I completed the Couch to 5K and then another program - and can now run 10K :)

The deadline for entering is on Sunday and when I raised this today in the office, everyone else dropped out!! And now I'm not sure what to do. I still really want to do it because I've been working towards it as a goal for months, but a couple of people have said that it seems "a strange thing to do on my own".

Is entering a race or something like this on your own unusual? One of my friends said you're meant to do it with people to get everyone through the obstacles etc. But I don't see why I should miss out on something I've been working towards just because my friends aren't as committed to their fitness as I am :ohwell:

  • There's nothing weird about going at it alone! I mean sure, it'd be NICE to have someone there with you.. to help you through the obstacles and share in the experiences of doing something of this magnitude for the very first time....But as we all know, people can be total let downs, whether it's intentional or not.

Regardless of the others, you'll still be doing something that has meaning to it for YOU. It's all about you now. ^__^

I did one as a team & I'm sure that's how it's intended to be done, but I would do one on my own. You can go around the obstacles that you can't do on your own.

Or- everyone is there to have a good time- if you get to an obstacle & there's another group there you can pitch in & help them get through/over it & they'll help you, too. You could even chat up some people at the start- tell them your group bailed & ask if they mind having an unofficial teammate.

Definitely don't sacrifice your (fun) goal because everyone at your office wimped out. Maybe you'll make a friend at the race & then you'll have someone to run the next one with as well.
  • I hope I'm not the only person on my own! :(
