Anyone ever suffered lower back spasms?

I had a problem with back spasms about 6 years ago, and now when i try to work out like doing sits ups and lifting hand weights (im only using 2lbs) my back feels funny afterwards, almost like its wanting to start going into a spasm. Has anyone ever suffered with this and lost weight successfully? I want to keep going with my workouts but im worried that i am gonna mess my back up again :(:(:(

I have a blown disk in my lower back and 2 years ago I couldn't stand, sit or walk. Very painful!! I still have numbness in my left calf and foot. I used to workout hard, But had to slow it down. I did indoor walking videos then I added weights and SLOWLY did more vigororous workouts. Even now I have to modify all my workouts. Listen to our body. Muscle relaxers work too!

I have back spasms. It's hard to work out sometimes, but the more weight that comes off the less frequently they seem to occur =). I usually stick with cardio because anything remotely related to a sit-up, push up, or any weights above about 5lbs can throw my back into a spasm or mess up my shoulder. I guess I don't really have any advice other than drop some pounds and see what you can do! Push your limits, but don't make yourself uncomfortable or compromise your health =).
  • I have two ruptured discs in my back and constantly deal with spasms and nerve pain. Its challenging to stay moving but you have to modify your workout so that way its not as bad. I do low impact cardio and circuit training and then stretch at least twice a day and use a muscle relaxer at night. This seems to help some. As long as you eat your calorie budget and keep moving even if its walking, you will lose. Lose 10 lbs so far in 2 months. Working out so far :) Good luck and stay in touch. It can be quite challenging dealing with back pain. I've been at it for 7 yrs now. Take it a day at a time.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned core work -- I find planks much less stressful on the back and more impactful than situps.

2lb weights are so light I'm surprised they're having an impact - how is your form? are you using your back at all in the lifting?
  • I have had them in the past. Depending on how you are doing sit ups, they can be hard on your back. Ever look into doing a martial art? I do Taekwondo (started with my son now I do it more than he does). I had always struggled with the routine of gyms and weights etc. I found TKD not only to be a good workout physically but mentally as well. Its always different, and my range of motion has improved tremendously. I'm 42 and sit behind a desk all day.

ohhhh yeah ,,,,, it may get better but its not something you can put a timetable to.
You have to listen to your back first,,,,, and redirect the desire to do traditional exercises into finding things that help your back.
remember when you could not stand up from a toilet or chair without help ???? remember that pain and be determined to modify the exercises while giving your back the support it needs. what exercises and stretches are you doing Just for your back ???? give it some thought ... don't be afraid to go slow ,,, and remember to ice... bye....... later

Hi thanks for all your replies..Well, using the 2lbs was doing things like squats and rasing the arms in front of me while holding the dumbells. I guess I'll have to take it easy and do what I can. i can't do anything that requires wearing pants ( i only wear skirts) so any type of karate is out. Are there any good exercises that I can do to strengthen my lower back?
Ok, also. ....what do they mean when they say " keep your abs tight" or "pull you bellyboutton back" do they mean to flex my abs or to suck in?
