Some of you may have seen reports about the school lunch policy issue the last week or so. The YouTube video "We Are Hungry" that sparked the discussion was made by students and teachers at my son's school, he's a first grader and is seen in the video. 20/20 came to our school this week and the story aired last night. It seems like every national news story about this video is twisted to say that the kids don't like the new lunch mandates because they get so many fruits and veggies when in fact the reason our school spoke out is that the high school students (a majority of who play sports and also work on farms that lift weights an hour before school and have practice for at least 2 hours after school... And if you played HS sports like I did you know how intense the workouts can be!) are limited to only 1-2 oz of protein a day and have a very limited amount of carbs in their lunch. And they are not allowed to have "seconds" on these items, only fruits and veggies. I can see the problem....... Healthy is good but when you are restricting protein and carbs, the very thing you need to fill up and fuel a very active teenager, I think that is very unhealthy! A 220lb senior football player is eating the same thing as an inactive 100lb freshman girl. The health problem lies in the chemically laden, processed crap they call food in my opinion, but that's another issue:) Anyway, check out the YouTube video "We Are Hungry"

I also heard, though, that a lot of food is getting thrown away. I don't know how factual that is, it's just what I've heard, but if it is true then that could partially explain why kids are hungry. As far as protein goes... well, feeding a school full of kids fresh lean meats would get pretty expensive, I'd imagine. It's unfortunate, but I suppose if I was a parent and I was concerned about it, I'd send my kids to school with some kind of protein snack, like beef jerky (the good kind).0

These mandates is extremely stupid and dangerous. Basically the government is trying to stop Childhood Obesity by starving kids in schools. The sad part when they get home they'll just overeat anyways.
If anything they need more proteins/carbs if anything namely if they have Gym class in the Morning. Also schools are throwing away food...... 1 out of 6 children in America is going hungry figure that out.0
