Use of HRM

I have a new Polar FT7 for running. I was wondering at what point do you stop it after the run? I'm using it until my HR returns to normal both to see how long it takes to get back and total calories. Does this sound OK?

Thanks
Should I continue to count the calories or stop counting from when I stop actually running. Took me nearly 30 mins to get back to normal today, but this is VERY rare.
