Running with dogs?

The dog harness thread got me thinking. We've been talking on and off about getting a dog; we're talking about it pretty seriously now. I would love a dog that I could run with but I also have a small child, cats, and a 1000 SF house. We're fine with mixed breeds and yes, I know everyone is going to tell me to go into a shelter, but I would like an idea of a dog I could take running with me who would also fit into my household, so was hoping people would be willing to make a recommendation of a breed or mix to keep my eyes open for :) Thanks!

I don't have breed recommendations. I think you have to decide the kind of dog and temperament that will work best with your family.

However, I did just come across this site that looks interesting:

  • I work at a vet office and my boss is a runner and has 3 young children. She runs with her Lab, Doberman, and a Dutch Shepherd.

If you have any rescues locally they would likely be a big help. Most rescues have their dogs in foster homes and know each dog's energy needs and temperament extremely well. You can contact rescues and tell them you are looking for a dog that is good with kids and would make a good running partner, and they can introduce you to dogs that fit your exact needs.

The other great thing about working with a rescue is most of them have "adoption trials" where you can take the dog on a test-run in your home and see if it is a good fit with your family and lifestyle before you 100% commit to the dog.

    Best of luck to you!
