I have always had a love for food, but managed my weight pretty well. Then I got married was un employed for awhile and fell into a depression. The only thing that made me feel good was food. I would wake up at 3:00 in the morning to eat and ate fast food and other horrible junk all the time. Now I have a dependency on food and large portions that I am trying to shake. But it is tough..... but I am not giving up!!!0

Love to eat, love to cook, comfortable in my marriage, love to feed my family, love to have a huge margarita when we go out to lunch or dinner ( which was about 3 days a week) and also love chardonnay, didn't do ANY form of exercise and didn't care to, loved to have a double Whopper with cheese and/or a Monster burger from Hardee's. I just loved to eat and have a few drinks and never thought about the calorie count in it!! That was then, those were the days LOL

I have used food to avoid emotions before... but I usually could control it.
I just started developing binge eating... and it was more often than normal... (I mean normal could be 1-3 binges a year...which I never considered a big problem. I didn't notice much weight gain from them, either. ) But the binging became more often...started happening every week... Bleh.
Oh well ! I'm on track now, I'll be to my goal soon enough. I won't give up. I've been finding other coping mechanisms.0 -
I eat when I'm bored, and I like food. Portion control was not part of my childhood.0

For me it was the death of both my parents, then the loss of both of my wife’s parents plus a brother (only a couple of years older than me and in far better shape) and a sister of hers. I got in to booze big time and crawled in to a hole and stayed there for a long time. The more I drank the more hungry I got so the more deliveries we got. My wife is one of the lucky ones who don’t put weight on so it didn’t hit her that I was getting so fat. That’s why I’m on here, I’m losing weight for me and the only person that can do this for me is me. Rant over, peace and love to all.0

Never had a weight problem until I had kids.. My body changed and I noticed that I couldn't eat certain things anymore and not pay the consequences. I'm learning my body all over again.0

i love food! especially fast food...and when i was younger thats all i knew and was fed so i got into the bad habit. and then i stopped dancing/cheering and playing basketball and still ate junk. and also im an emotional eater0

I love eating, I eat when I'm bored, I always ate a ton of junk food (especially sweets). I always ate way too much as a kid, and have been overweight my whole life, but at least I was always active and doing some kind of sport. After I graduated high school, I kept eating like I was still an athlete. Kept the freshman 15 off for the first semester, but then gained it the next along with my own "sophomore 20". so ready to be done with it all! I'm back down to my senior-year-in-high-school weight, and working my way down to my middle school weight!!0

College! My dining halls are all-you-could-eat buffets. I went from 165-200 in a semester before I realized what I was doing to myself. The next semester I gained another 25 cause I didn't know how to control it. Last year I bought a scale and eventually motivated myself to start losing. I want to lose another 60 lbs so I need to get back on it!0

like you i kinda used food as a drug. everyone kept puting me down and all. i'mnow trying to take my life back becasue the weight has casued health problems like blood pressure diebetes and i'm starting to have night mares that i know are from t he weight even though i cant prove it0

I got too comfy in my relationship after haveing out new born x
This was me, plus my lifestyle changed also. I used to always be out with my friends before I got pregnant and I loved to dance! Once baby came, that was me in all the time so my treat became a take out and drinks in front of the TV!

Undiagnosed depression and hypothyroidism plus overweight parents. That's a nice combination0

1) I've never been fat, or even clinically overweight, but my heighest weight resulted from a medication I was taking. It changed the way I processed food. I went off it, and in terms of my weight history I think it was the smartest decision of my life.
2) The next most important reason I've gained weight, or had more trouble maintaining it,is getting older. My metabolism has slowed down. In addition, by the time you're over a certain age you may have had certain injuries or you develop vulnerabilities that keep you from working out as hard as you once might have been able to, although I've never liked exercise. I'm short, slight, and can't eat many calories. I also don't carry weight as well as other people.
3) Finally, boredom has caused me problems. When I've been at a job I disliked and there was a vending machine in the office, I would find myself gaining 5 to 10 pounds over the course of a year.
4) Bad habits that don't support my weight goals. I'm someone who has a tendency to binge, or at least overindulge, and I don't do well when I buy anything I like in bulk. I need to remind myself that a discount doesn't help if I'm going to be paying a "weight surcharge." I'm better off paying a bit more for, say, energy bars, on an individual basis than buying a box that I consume in a week or less.0 -
Lots of reasons, more like ridiculous excuses in my case.
1) Falling out of the habit of doing exercise during college, and concurrently discovering alcohol and cheesy chips at 4 o'clock in the morning
2) Eating massive amounts of pistachios every day in the library throughout my final year at university
3) Being 'a bit too happily married', as my mother commented once
4) Living in Muslim countries for the last five years, meaning that if I want exercise, I need to plan and put in some effort to make it happen, and also wearing billowy clothes means much more room to hide...
5) Loving to cook and serving myself the same portions as my husband0 -
Being an overweight kid and teenager, resulting in brutal bullying, resulting in clinical depression, resulting in not caring about what and how much I eat and not caring about what it did to my body and my well being.0

oh wow! Could I say all of the above? I used food as a crutch, I could eat and it was satisfying and that's what I did. Eat and eat and eat. 3 children (grown now) but gained with the last one until I was very fat and sassy. Never lost it all. I tore my achilles tendon and couldn't do anything for a long time. Then I started hurting all over, to find out that I have osteo arthritis. Then doctors said its in most of my joints. I'm tired of hurting all over when I move so I had to start moving so I could feel better. When I started moving I have started loosing and hopefully will stop hurting!0

For me, it wasn't a single factor: middle-age (and it's attendant change in natural metabolism), maternity, anemia-based depression, sedentary lifestyle (work, reading, blogging...), and ignorance of the content of what I was eating.
The big question for me is actually, "Why did I wait until I was 60+ lbs overweight to do anything about it?" Part of the reason was that I didn't realize that I had gained that much weight (didn't have a full-length mirror, didn't weigh myself and, bought larger more comfortable clothes), attitude (once I realized how much I weighed I thought it was great that my size now matched my attitude!),and again, ignorance (this time not only about what I was eating; but the forces at play by the food & marketing industries.)
I tried to lose weight twice before and I while I didn't succeed then, I used those experiences to figure out what I was doing wrong and, this last time, how to do it right! :-)0 -
Broke off an engagement, had to quit school, moved back to Minnesota, got a great job, quit working out.0

For me it started when I found out that I had an arrhythmia and that eventually I'd need a transplant, I was 15 and it scared the hell out of me so I ate and ate, then in march 2012 my fiance broke up with me and I was completely crushed. I was catatonic and my mother sent me to heal with my abuelita in LA. She fed me and fed me till I could burst. I just kept eating and couldn't stop until I looked in the mirror one morning in august and told myself I can live life without him, that I could be strong and have a wonderful life without him. since then I've moved into my own house, lost 8 lbs and my goal weight is to get back down to 150 Lbs. I'm determined and as long as your determined to loose the weight, get healthy and be happy I've learned nothing can stand in your way0

Began with a sports injury in high school - believe it or not I ran cross country, best shape of my life, but my injury required me to barely exercise AT ALL while I was recovering on crutches. Combine that with parents' divorce, and realizing "hey, I can eat whenever / whatever I want, don't only have to eat what Mom puts in front of me" and soon I was eating randomly. Got worse in college - I'm a procrastinatory eater. If I was studying I'd go grab a candy bar to put things off.0

people around me were over weight
now it's all changed, no food as reward or when bored or depressed, more exercise and I really like it now, being around skinny people, not trying to eat more then designated portions (and less then portion sizes cause in America our portion sizes are way larger then they are supposed to be), seeing the consequences of what being overweight can do to your health (others examples), still like food and reading. Don't think those will ever change.0
