Swimming with your Polar HRM?

Good morning! According to the manual, the Polar HRM can be used during swimming but the book says not to press the buttons on the wrist unit/watch while underwater.

Do any of you wear your HRM while swimming? Anyone worn one in the ocean?

Thanks!

I wear mine swimming and it spurs you on if you start slacking, as for the ocean, not in the north sea, you would be dead in about 2/3 mins!!!

Make sure you look at how deep it can go. I know the FT4 is water resistance and not water proof..whereas the FT40 and FT70 are waterproof down to like 50 feet or something like that.

Again, read your model's manual to see for sure

I've tried it, can't get it to read.

Saltwater is death to electronics, so you may shorten the life in the ocean. Rinse it VERY well.

It depends on the one you have... I have two chest straps for this very reason. The fabric chest strap with the little monitor thing that pops on and off *does not work* in the pool (chlorine). It only works intermittently. The other strap (plastic across your chest) works well, but I find that I have to keep it a little bit tighter than if I were running. Overall, I got inconsistent results. I have a FT7.

I have the FT4 and swim with it often because I train and do triathlons. I've never had a problem with it in the water. Just don't press the buttons like they say.

I did! Exactly 3 times...then I figure it was gonna be hit or miss...would the watch pick up the chest strap's sensor....It was frustrating...

What I learned though was my average heart and from there I could calculate the "burn"

I wish they made a HRM that was reliable under water! But as you get familiar with your energy-heart rate expenditure i twill be easy to figure.

Sitting equal 1 calorie per minute....swimming may be 4 cals per minute....

    KEEP SWIMMING!
