What's the obsession with almond milk?

I drink skim, so it's fat free and I don't think twice about it. Not to mention that I've never had to pay more than $3 a gallon for it. Are the benefits really worth more than double the price?

Depends on the situation. It's not just the calories:

Almond milk is thicker and creamier - more similar to whole milk. So for half the calories of skim milk you get the creaminess of whole milk. Makes a difference in smoothies and shakes.

    Many adults are lactose intolerant.

Some of us eat a plant-based diet; almond milk fits into that where regular milk doesn't

YMMV. If you like skim milk, carry on.

I dont know. I attempted to make pudding with it to save calories. EPICALLY MONSTROUS DISASTER! It was runny and lumpy and tasted wrong. Back to skim it is!

In my opinion, it is far better than other "alternative" milks for things like cereal. I don't consume dairy for ethical reasons. One health advantage is that almond milk isn't full of all the hormones and antibiotics than regular milk is full of.

no obsession with 'non-milk' like almond, soy or coconut here. I just can't drink a glass of milk, it makes me sick.....I have been perfectly happy with soy/almond or other non-dairy 'milk' for over 20 years

I like the taste, and almonds aren't milked by process of artificial hormones.

I started drinking it for the 40 calories (unsweetened almond breeze vanilla) instead of 90 for skim milk but I've come to the point where I like the taste better - well in things like oatmeal or on cereal. Plain is nice too if you add a little truvia and vanilla. Also I use very little milk and almond milk doesn't expire near as fast so even though it costs more for me it actually evens out since every time I buy a half gallon of milk I throw half of it out.
  • It's for lactose intolerant people who don't like the flavor of soy. I'm not lactose intolerant but have bought the shelf stable cartons because I don't drink milk enough and it always ends up spoiling. It tastes better than powdered milk & soy in my opinion. The only milk alternative that I found that had fewer calories than skim was called Soy Slender Lite. http://imagethumbnails.milo.com/018/631/974/trimmed/18631411_22792974_trimmed.jpg
They used to have it Target, but the one by my house stopped carrying it.

I'll stick with 1% in my coffee and skim for my midnight chocolate milk!

I drink almond milk because dairy milk makes my skin break out and I also like the taste better than dairy milk.

Almond milk has less calcium, more fat, and less protein that skim milk. I'm lactose intolerant but it's cheaper for me to buy skim Lactaid and reap the nutritional benefits than to buy almond milk.

I drink almond as I can have dairy or soya - it tastes better than rice milk.

I have almond in my cereal and smoothies, and semi-skimmed in my tea. I love almond milk, it feels like a treat to myself and is really tasty! I've suffered from acne for the last year or so and cutting down my dairy intake seems to be helping. Also, I hate skim milk and so almond milk is a way of cutting down the cals without drinking something watery.

Lactaid also has four times the carbs, twice the calories. The difference in fat is negligible. 3g of fat in a cup of milk never made anyone fat.
8g of protein might be a big deal if you're a vegetarian and you have problems finding protein sources.

    I'll stick with almond.

I've never liked drinking milk. Plus almond milk has more calcium than regular milk and I feel like I need all the calcium I can get. I mostly use it in my protein shakes, cereal and oatmeal. I tried using 1% milk in my shake the other day and it was so thick that I could hardly drink it.

    1. Less calories.
    2. Less sugar.
    3. Better consistency in shakes, smoothies, etc.
    4. I need the extra calcium.
    5. I like knowing that it wasn't secreted from a mammary gland.

What is the purpose of cow milk? To feed baby cows, right? I am not a baby cow. Human bodies are not built to process certain things. Yes we CAN drink cows milk...... a lot of people do with no adverse reactions, it upsets my tummy in a bad way though. The almond tastes pretty good. And, it is FAR fewer calories than cow milk. I *try* to eat mostly clean things, I fail at times, as we all do. I just feel physically better if I stick to almond milk.

I don't like the taste of cows milk, even as a kid. Makes me queasy and as I've gotten older it makes my stomach cramp up if I drink more than half a cup. Will still use reg. milk in cereal but that's about it.

Drinking dairy milk hurts my stomach and I hate the taste of it. I also have no interest in drinking another animal's breastmilk.

Almond milk tastes really good and is only 30 cal per cup, which is a great bonus. It's awesome in cereal :)

people like that the calorie amount is so low.
  • Can't drink cow's milk, love goat's milk but Almond is cheaper and is almost as good.
  • I'm thinking of switching to cow's milk myself actually. Seems all around a better choice! (no this wasn't brought on by this thread)

Very little hormone use in the dairy industry anymore. Walmart, Kroger, and pretty much everyone else have stopped their farmers from the practice.

I became soy intolerant not too long ago. I was looking into coconut and almond milks and notice the lack of protein in them. Back to 2% for me =\

Almond milk is Paleo Approved™, regular milk is not, nor is soy milk.

Is not an almond milk obsession, its a paleo obsession.

I love cow's milk. I've tried alternatives and they just don't do it for me. If you like cow's milk and it works for you, stick with it.

I have just recently started using almond milk or the almond/coconut blend. I mostly use it in my coffee. I use either that or tons of halfnhalf. Using the almond milk cuts way down on my calorie/carb count. I cannot drink skim or low fat milk as it raises my blood glucose level. Removing the fat from milk just leaves all the milk sugar without anything to slow down the glycemic impact.
