I've recorded over 1 million steps on my pedometer :)

Posted this to my status but thought I would share here as well. In June I recognized my lifestyle has gotten extremely sedentary. Having almost zero interest in starting a hard core workout program my first baby step was to purchase a pedometer and try and hit 10K steps a day. But first I recorded my average steps with my then current lifestyle. On a workday I would average anywhere from 2,750-3,500 steps in a day. On a weekend I would average anywhere from 1,000 to 3,000 (non average had days of over 10k). So 10K steps would increase my steps and therefore my activity level considerably!! The pedometer I bought also tracks "aerobic steps" separately. These are steps that take place when walking a minimum of 10 minutes continuously while also at a pace of at least 60 steps a minute. My average there was previously ZERO!

About 3 weeks after buying the pedometer I rediscovered myfitnesspal and now that it had an app for my Iphone I got hooked right away. In a little over 2 months of using the pedometer and myfitnesspal I lost over 20 lbs!!! The success I was having and changes in my appearance also ramped up my motivation to the point I was ready to challenge myself further. So on 9/10 I started up a "hard core workout" program in the form of P90X and also happened to hit my goal weight that week. Now I'm all about trying to drop body fat% through P90X. I still continue to wear my pedometer every day and use myfitnesspal too.

I did miss a few periods of time with the pedometer. About 7-10 days when I got sick and lost the pedometer for a few days and lost my history (only holds previous 7 days) and another week while on a houseboat vacation where I just didn't wear it.

It was actually last Friday that I recorded my millionth step and as of the end of yesterday my pedometer stats are:

Days recorded - 101
Total steps recorded - 1,027,229
Avg steps per day - 10,171
Total days over 10K - 64
Total days under 10K - 37

Total aerobic steps - 516,086
Average aerobic steps per day - 5,060
Total aerobic walking time - 4,880 minutes
Average aerobic walking time per day - 48 minutes

Total miles walked - 486

As a kid (and somewhat secretly today) I loved playing RPG video games where you built up a character and made them stronger. So having a pedometer to measure my progress with I think taps into that same personality trait that loves to see a stat go up as a direct result of my efforts. The only downfall is that if for some reason I forget my pedometer I feel like any walking I did doesn't even count lol.

My next goal is to hit 1 million aerobic steps.

Good on you, well done!!! I recently bought a Fibit and made sure I hit 10,000 steps on my first day. Think I hit 15,000 on my second or third. They do encourage you to do that little extra.

I LOVE IT! Congratulations! For those who say that walking "doesn't do anything" and that you can't lose weight with walking, I believe you have proven them wrong! Like you, I first began my fitness journey with the goal of making 10K steps a day. Like you, my beginning average was <3,000 a day. Walking alone helped me drop the first 15 pounds, and the progress I made motivated me to challenge myself more. Here's to baby steps and continued success on your journey! :drinker:

:drinker: Congratulations on the One Millionth Step!! That is Fabulous in such a Short time!!

 AND, THANKS for letting me know that I am not the only one who feels like the Steps "Don't Count" if I am not wearing my Pedometer or if it Loses It's Mind half way through the day!! I know that it isn't True, but my First thought is always "Crap, Now I Wasted All Those Steps"

    HI,
I also use a pedometer and do a minimum of 10,000 steps per day, I have been using it for over a year now,

The British Heart Foundation website says that you burn 400 calories if you do 10,000 over the course of the day so that is the measure I use although as I have lost weight the calorie net has gone down to 357. This is the only form of exercise I do at the moment but it's working as I have lost 20 lb doing that and calorie counting.

Congratulations on your millionth, I haven't added mine up but when I started, it was to do a walk around the earth challenge at work and so far I have walked 7% around the earth. which I think puts me somewhere in the Atlantic one way or Denmark the other
