Whether it is working out with weights from home, or joining a gym to strength train you should definitely start hitting the weights.

The only thing with home gym is that you are going to be limited unless you have a lot of space, i.e. a basement that you can turn into a gym. I have a second room that i converted into a office/gym and have dumbbells, pull up bar, straight bar, etc, but the only problem is no squat rack so I can only squat x amount.

I am now going to join a gym..just went today and got a week free pass, if I like the place I am going to join...

So if you can join a gym, do it..:)
  • Wow, so many replies, thank you :)

It's a hard decision because I know what I've been like before with the gym, but then I've been good at going out running three times a week, so maybe it will be better. We're going to look at finances and then if it's ok I'll join, the one I'll join is no contract, but then it's a bit more expensive and you have the joining fee, although might try and get them down on that, not sure I'll have much luck though.

I also quite like just getting out of the house lol, with a 3 year old and a 1 year old I see enough of these 4 walls!

I might see how I get on with some home workouts for a few weeks before I take the plunge!

Thanks for all the help :)

join join join. it is sooo worth it. I've lost 30 inches from various parts of my body since joining the ymca and doing strength training and cardio. If you have a Y I would definitely recommend it even more than a gym. And the y offers financial assistance so it'll prooly cost less and they offer more classes and features than most gyms. And my 2 yr old nephew loves when I take him.

buy weights....save gas. I found I never went to the gym, just stayed at home....and I like running in cold weather, so running isn't an issue during the winter.

you can do ANYTHING you can do at the gym without the assistance of machines at the gym.
  • I usually do a smaller work out at the gym than I do when at home.
If I have a spare 30 mins its easy to put on my ugly clothes and do a quick dvd or walk my dog or go for a jog.
When I get changed, drive to the gym, do a little work (wait for the intimidating hot guys using the weights to piss off so I can with my poor form) and do it , I usually get the same work out time + a lot of standing around, driving, showering, getting ready and all that.
