I have run for years at all hours of the night and day in a variety of settings without any problem. I would say you can do that too, BUT... I would recommend not wearing earphones if you are going to be in a more remote area so as to be alert for sounds of anyone's or anything's approach, and to be more atune to and observant of the natural world around you. You might see some wonderful things you've never seen before! If you plan to run in a more public and trafficked area be alert for drivers who aren't paying attention to pedestrians. I have screamed more times than I care to list, "DON"T RUN OVER ME!!!" If you run at night wear as much reflective clothing as you can so you will be seen, if not a flashing light that can be attached to your arm or ankle.
My experience being out runnning is that other people on the path, wherever and whenever it is, are just as afraid of me, if not more so, than I am of them. You have the advantage of being already in motion with the ability to sprint if needed and the momentum of the motion to knock someone else off their feet. I like to carry small weights (best no more than 1 pound) that can be used as weapons, if necessary, adding a little bit of aerobic and strength benefit.
Go for it and take care. Enjoy!

Do you have a friend who has a dog you could borrow for the trail runs?

I run alone too, and I worry about something crazy happening. I only run with one earbud in, so that I can still rock out to my music, but can be aware of what's going on around me. I also just ordered a RoadID to put on my shoe from http://www.roadid.com/ worth the $20 for me! It also helps to have had self defense training, there are a lot of simple things to learn that can help you get out of scary situations (and they can sometimes the classes can be good cardio too!)

Unless my husband wants to go with me, when I run outside I typically run alone. Then again I live out in the middle of nowhere with zero traffic

I'm a very social runner, so any chance I get to run WITH someone, I do.

That said, I will trail run on my own while the kids are in school. You can always carry mace to make you feel safer. I've also heard of a new GPS watch that has a panic button that will send the police your exact location.

And I've done MANY races without a friend, even two half marathons!

Only you know your trails and whether or not they are safe, with or without mace.
My wife always runs with others, and I sometimes accompany her. The miles go MUCH faster and easier when you have someone to talk with.

I have really started enjoying running this year. There are only a few people I know that actually run at all. While doing a normal run outside I have no problems running by myself. However, I would like to start trail running. The only time I can do it is when my kids are in school, which makes all of my friends unavailable. So is it unsafe to go trail running by myself?
Another event I wish to have somebody is a 6k at night with a Halloween theme. This seems to be a fun race that would be nice to have sombody to do it with. Would you run it alone?

i always run on my own and at night. probably slightly unsafe but i aint dead yet haha
