Which heart rate monitor to buy?

I'm planning to get something that will give me a fairly accurate reading of the calories I burn during a work out. I'm assuming that would be a heart rate monitory? What do you recommend? What are things I should look for when buying one? I've never worked out before the end of 2009. I would walk as my only form of exercise. I do Weight Watchers and would use their pedometer which would tell me how many points I've earned. Now that I'm getting into work out DVDS, really pushing myself when I walk and counting calories rather then points I would like something that will pretty accurately show me what I've burned.
Thank you!

  • I was just discussing this topic with my brother...I really want him to get one so he can track his calories during his weight training sessions. Some monitors only do heart rate...make sure all things are listed in the description such as calorie counter. Also don't go for the wireless monitors...they don't track accurately. The chest strap with the wrist receiver is the best bet. They run from about $50 to $150 on average. Polar is a popular brand as well as Timex and Sigma. Most come with a chest strap that is not super comfortable for women and do not have replaceable batteries. The strap last a long time before they need to be replaced. I just purchased a new strap that is fabic all the way around and much more comfortable. That strap cost about $50. Amazon.com has good prices. You can also find them at most major sporting good stores, and performance.com also has them priced well at times. Hope this was helpful....I definitely love having the monitor!

I just ordered a Polar F6 today online. It's supposed to be a pretty good one from what I've heard.

I just purchased a Mio Motiva Petite, which is a wireless one, and I find it quite accurate once you get the hang of using it. I calculates HR and Cals, plus you can input your intake for a net cal reading. With the HR, it gives you a resting HR, a recovery HR (which will let you know what the intensity of your workout is).

I have a reebok XT and it was only $40.00. Does everything a Polar does and for waaaaay less money. It comes with a chest strap and works like a dream!
  • Here's a link to learn more about heart rate... Also there are links to the monitors themselves.
