Exercise before breakfast?

I am also a Type 1 and if I exercise in the morning it is ALWAYS before breakfast - I just make sure my blood sugar is high enough to sustain the workout. That said, I workout at 6 a.m. which is right after I wake up. If I were going to be up and active for an hour or two (which I think you said you would be), I would eat something. Then just make sure my blood sugar can handle the exercise. I am extremely sensitive to the insulin and my dr. says not to exercise if my sugar is below 200, and sometimes even if it's that high I'll drop really fast while working out. You just need to know how you react to exercise / eating / not eating because even among us Type 1's, we all aren't the same.0

Thanks everyone for the replies....
I do realize that being diabetic changes things, but my question really was, does it make a difference if you eat before or after your exercise.....because I have heard both, that it is better to eat before, and to not eat before....I just want to make sure I am not sabotaging myself.....
Unfortunately, you and your individual diabetic needs, treatments, etc, does make a difference to go right back to the treating physicians. Not all diabetics have the same care plan involved.
The only person who can appropriately tell you whether or not you will sabotage yourself is the treating physicians overseeing your care.
MFP is not a viable health/medical resource and they do not have access to your medical records, personal/family history, labs, medications, etc..... you will never get a valid response here because there are no clinicians available.
As someone who works in healthcare right now for 17+ years, even I would tell patients like you "do not go to a non-medical website - always discuss your health/medical questions with the physician who is treating you"... thats just good common sense...0 -
And just now saw your response about your shots - I wouldn't drastically change your routine without a) talking to your doctor and b) keeping your monitor very close to keep an eye on how your blood sugar reacts at different times during the workouts. I'm on a pump so it's easier for me to manipulate my blood sugar. I've been diabetic for over 30 years and while I'm not an expert, I can pretty much tell how my body is going to respond to certain activites and/or foods.0

I do a 6:10 class every morning without eating first....I don't get to eat my breakfast until around 8:30...
As a diabetic, you will need to listen to your body...if you need to eat, have something.
Good luck!0
