My hubby and I both have high cholesterol. My Dr recently called after I had my annual check up blood work done and said that I need to come in to discuss my cholesterol. So I can only imagine that this is not a good thing. I'm very concerned and almost afraid to go but I know that I must. I could really use some tasty low cholesterol recipes or tips to lower my cholesterol. But I also want to stay low carb. I know this asking a lot but if anyone out there in MFP has anything to share I would greatly appreciate it! :-)

Are you sure it is your diet? There are many other things that affect cholesterol levels

Honestly I'm not sure. But I do know that up until I started here on MFP I did not eat very healthy. Lots of sweets, cakes, chocolate, things like that. Eggs and bacon and sausage. I have pretty much cut most of those items out of my diet as they are to high in calories. However I still have bacon a once in a while

BTW. I join in Feb but I didn't get serious about it until about 4 weeks ago

Your best bet really is to talk with your doctor so see what s/he recommends. And an health diet is not a bad thing anyway. :) My father had high cholesterol that could not be controlled by diet or exercise and took medication for it. In my case we could never get my good cholesterol high even through diet and exercise and I ended up on Niaspan. Happy ending there though is once I was diagnosed as Celiac and went gluten free my good cholesterol shot up. Anyway, sorry to ramble and diet is way better than drugs, but genetics and exercise are part of the equation too

I had a false positive for celiac once. I was so miserable! Now I hardly eat anything with wheat so it doesn't matter too much.

As for the cholesterol, I am sure genetics have something to do with it as my mom has high cholesterol and extremely high triglicerides. But she was not diagnosed with that until about 8 years ago. I am significantly younger the her when she was diagnosed so I can only assume that my weight is a factor. But I want to be careful with what I am eating. I have already cut back on how much beef I eat and try to stay away from too much processed food. I am doing better and better with it as every day passes. I was just hoping that someone out there would have some suggestions or ideas to keep things interesting in the kitchen /dinner table

Don't fret! I run marathons and suffer from high blood pressure and high cholesterol. My brother also has high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Its is heredity on our part. Both my grandfather and uncle on my mom's side died of heart disease before any medication was available to treat the problems. Today there are great prescription medications out there. And with generic drugs, you will only have to pay about $4.00 a bottle.

Thank you for the reassurance. Unfortunately with my being over weight I have fatty liver disease. As such I am unable to take any medication to control my cholesterol without further damaging my liver. This is one of the reasons why I am on here and trying my hardest to loose weight. I'm so afraid of something worse happening to me and I want to be around to see my son married and have children of his own
