I know this is the season where everyone floods to the gyms. I know this because I now can't get a treadmill at my gym that I have been going to for over a year. I am guessing that there are several of you who may be feeling the way I do, physically.
Here is my problem: I had been doing better about trying to incorporate some jogging into my walking. Then I got sick about two weeks ago and I just couldn't workout with the cardio. I would do some light weight lifting at home with hand weights, just so I didn't lose everything, but cardio sucked the air out of my lungs. Last night I got back to the gym and I was super excited to start the couch to 5k (C25K) program. I had tried it 7-8 months ago and gotten to week 4 before I let myself become distracted/discouraged. But I knew that I could do week 1 without problems... WRONG! I couldn't even walk at my normal speed, let along do all of the 1 minute jogging sessions. I was short of breath and run down. The biggest problem- not only did it hurt my physically in that sense, it was SOOO demoralizing to realize how quickly my body can lose its stamina. I know, I know, just keep going and it will come back. And yes, I think a lot of it is that I haven't completely recovered from being sick, but it threw me for a loop and took the shine off of my excitement to get back into a healthy program.
So, for those of you that are starting up again, or for the first time, you aren't the only ones who may have some trouble getting to the energy and stamina level you THINK you should be at. "Should" is a 4 letter word for me now!

Don't be discouraged! Keep your head up!
Don't know if this is what you had, but there's been a nasty little thing going around and the effects of which hold on for weeks after the initial sickness passes... it's been targeting lungs and airways. Just listen to your body, rest, and as hard as it is, try to give your lungs a little bit longer to recover.
