Exercising with a disability

Im pretty sure im not going to be the only person on here that is attempting to loose weight with a disability. I was just wondering how many times a week you exercise for? what type of exercise you do? and how long is each session! i saw my health trainer recently because ive been having more and more symptom flares recently and getting increasingly sicker because ive been over doing my exercise. ideally i want to do at least 30mins + a day and quite often i do, even if its just walking. but its having a detrimental affect on my health. my health trainer says i should aim for 30mins 4 times a week to give my body enough time to rest. but if i do that i feel lazy i love walking and swimming, but i cant go swimming on my own really or to a gym because i need support, which atm i dont have so i mainly walk when i can. any one in a simular situation with any advice

i have a Chronic pain disorder which leaves me in agony a lot of the time, so exercise is difficult (as well as various other medical conditions). I also get very weak, and im sick a lot so my appitite is always up and down. It is one of these things a bit like arthritus that can be fine for ages and then flare suddenly without warning, and it leaves me either using crutches or a wheelchair. i take various meds to help with pain so its a steady 5-6 on the pain scale on a daily basis, on a bad day it can be 8-10 and i have to either use sedatives or go to a&e0

Hi, I live with long term pain too. I have a form of Arthritis and nerve damage affecting the soles of my feet.
I enjoy walking, just limited to distance and speed. I try and do one decent walk a week (upto an hour), plus a daily 15 minute walk.
I also fit in some time on Wii fit doing yoga and some of the more gentle exercises and activities. I try and do this for 30 minutes at least 3 times a week.

I also have a chronic pain disorder actually - there are quite a few on here (may be worth looking in the groups). I do exercise 5/7 days a week, but just go by what my body tells me. If I am feeling really bad I do something gentle like several short walks, or some pilates. If I'm feeling ok then I try to push myself and do a bit more. Currently I'm doing 30DS and most days I have to modify it or I would be in too much pain.
I guess my long winded point is that I do exercise, I just modify everything to suit how I'm feeling and even though I do push myself, I don't push myself too far. You have to get to know where your limit is between normal oh I'm tired exercise hurts and omg I can't move for the next month. :flowerforyou:0 -
You dont need to spend more than 30 minutes in a gym to reap the benefits. 30minutes strength training with big compound lifts and just try increase your non exercises based activity throughout the day. 30mins exercise and moderate activity during the day is ALOT better for you than 2-3 hours in the gym then sitting on your backside0

Hi there!
I have muscular dystrophy and confined to a powered wheelchair...
I currently use a stationary hand cycle 30 minutes 3x per week. I also use bodylastic resistance bands 3x per week too and have found 6 different exercises - In 10 weeks I have managed to lose 14 pounds so quite pleased with the results so far.
It may be worth Googling 'wheelchair exercises' or 'exercising while sitting' to find some simple work outs on here that may be of use to you.
I have read threads on here before where people with limited mobility have just moved around in bed a little bit, increasing it each day and have seen results.

Can you do yoga or gentle stretches?
Due to a botched hysterectomy I had six incisional hernias repaired the first time, and two hernias repaired the second time. I have one 10 x 12 piece of mesh installed for one repair and patches for the other repair. I will never be able to do crunches or ab work and this makes me sad....but that's okay...my bikini days are over and I'm happy to be living.
I also need ankle surgery that I've been putting off because it usually is only a dull ache and I am sick sick sick of hospitals and surgery.
So....I walk on good days and do a little stretching on bad days and try to focus on what I can accomplish. It helps. Good luck to you.0 -
thanks for the advice guys spoke to my health trainer monday and she said im pushing myself too much, so going to cut it down. as long as i do 30-40mins a day, 4 days a week thats enough, and then gentle exercise for the rest like yoga or walking to post office and back0
