My BMR is 1651 and my TDEE is 1981. Is it ok that I am only eating 1200 calories?

Thanks.

    It's ok.....for now.

1200 isn't sustainable for life, and if you stick with it, your body will probably give you signs when it's ready for more calories, usually in the form of a plateau. ;)

See how it goes and how you feel. If you are losing at 1200 and you are eating healthy and you feel ok...keep at it for a while, since it works. When things stop working thats a sign you may need to alter it.

Which calculator did you use, and at what setting? Those numbers seem close together.
  • no need to do that-- I'd eat about 1500. That's about 1 pound lost per week. That's plenty fast. Take it slow and steady.

With your TDEE you could eat 1500-1600 and lose just fine. Why struggle with 1200 when you can have results feeding your body a bit more. It sounds cliche but it's not a race. You'll get there :)

I'd go for more food, too. You can always cut back to 1200 when/if you hit a plateau.

It depends on how much weight you have to lose. It might be safe to do for awhile if you have a lot to lose. But why do that if you don't have to? I agree with kenazfehu, you can always cut back again if you need to. Try a higher number for about a month and see what happens.

I've been on 1200 calories since the first of the year; I work out 3-5 times a week for 30-45 minutes. my ticker represents the results. Even when I start increasing my calorie intake to maintain I'm never going to dis the 1200 number but that's because it works for me. I also know women who eat more calories who also lose weight; so in the end you have to find out what works for you.

Thanks for your advise. I have done this diet before at 1200 cals./day and lost about 20 lbs in 2 months...I was very satisfied! Then my mother in law got married and I did some traveling and GAINED IN ALL BACK & MORE. :(

I am currently 189 lbs at 5'4 and have a desk job.

Thanks, I too am 5-4, with a desk job, my current weight is 172.8. I worry about regaining when I reach goal so I am going to be very careful about how quickly I add more calories in until I find the right number for me. The calculators are a good tool but they don't take into account, medication I take, my personal metabolism, my insulin resistance or any number of variables that give me pause to just trusting a one size fits all formula.

Best of luck on your journey and I'm sure you will reach your goal.
