I'm in a dilemma.. I went to my doctor today and he does all of these tests on me where he checks my reflexes all over my body, its hard to explain... anyways he asked me if I'd been eating a lot of carbs (I had pizza last night and I pretty much never eat pizza) and he told me that I should cut the carbs cause thats what's causing me not to feel good and I guess it affects my large intestines and upsets my stomach and that's why I feel sick after I eat a lot of carbs or even just some... now I'm not into the low carb thing at all especially since I'm a runner but he said I need to try it, what do you guys eat more of if your not eating carbs? What at the negative and positives (if any) to this?! Thanks everyone!

Thats sounds pretty vast to say too much carbs is what makes sick... Is it too much sugar ? Or maybe gluten ?

I eat only non-refined carbs - i.e. rolled oats, barley, lots of fruits and veggies, including yams and sweet potatoes, as well as beans. I rarely have pasta, bread, or white rice--only as an ocassional treat during a "splurge meal" once a week or every two weeks. I have had a lot of sucess with the TIMING of my carbs as well. After my weight/cardio training in the early a.m., I WANT an insulin spike to re-fuel the glycogen stores in my muscles so I have a protein shake that includes a high glycemic carb like bananas. The rest of the day though, I taper carbs off so that by dinner time I am eating veggies for my carbs and lean protein like chicken, fish, shrimp, turkey, eggs, light cheese sticks, etc. This is a lifestyle that I have lived and enjoyed for the last 6 months, and I feel healthier than I ever have in my life. Hope this helps. Please feel free to ask me any additional questions you might have about what I do. Take care! :flowerforyou:

Thats what I was thinking when he said that...I got tested for the gluten and I'm not gluten intolerant.. he didn't have a very good explanation.

  • Hmmm, has he tested you for a gluten allergy or sensitivity? I'm all over the anti gluten kick, lol.

I have 4 kids, ages 2-16. Our two year old dd is autistic and we decided to try the gluten and casein free diet for her. Our family doc's exact words were "gluten can do some funky things to the body" when I spoke with him about the idea of just eliminating it from the house, because how do you explain to the two year old (who is already a handful) that she can't have this or that and everyone else can??? So...we've been doing it, not even 100% for about 6 weeks and everyone has noticed a difference!!! My teen agers are not breaking out at all, even at that time of the month. Everyone generally feels better, my dh is working out like mad and loving it, all of us have lost weight.

i am doing south beach because it's a healthy way (for me) to kick sugar, which I LOVE! If we weren't already gluten free, I wouldn't be doing it and I will eat sweet potatoes and oatmeal again, lol. It just happened to fit in well with our lifestyle.

I would try just eliminating gluten (which sounds hard but once you start doing it, it's not) and see what happens. Give yourself 2-4 weeks to see results. Eat potatoes, rice, and other carbs and see how you feel.

Just a suggestion, but it's worked SO well for our family. Feel free to message me if you need resources or have ???s.

Good luck with whatever you do.

Thanks, that helps! I think I might try and cut them as much as I can but it won't be easy thats for sure. Good to hear a positive outcome!

I was told by our doc that a negative test doesn't mean you aren't intolerant without a biopsy of the intestine, which we aren't doing to an already tortured 2 year old. I've read that over and over in reading about GF diets, both on the autism and celiac side. Also, allergy and intolerance are two different tests. Funny, when they did the tests, dd came back as allergic to egg whites and she LOVES eggs. I've eliminated them as well for her, and see NO change in her eczema or daipers, which is where the allergy should show up. Testing isn't always the answer, sometimes trial and error is just what works.

I think your right, thanks. I am going to just try and cut down on them as much as I can, still eating fruit though. I won't do the biopsy either but trial and error will help I'm sure, thanks!

Gluten and carbs are totally different things. I may be reading this wrong but it sounds like you think they are the same or similar? Gluten is found only in grains like wheat, barley, rye. It is added to a lot of processed foods and things like sauces, dressings, ect. There are no fruits and veggies that naturally contain gluten, so eat all of those that you'd like. DH eats potaotes and wild rice and a lot of the flour subs I use are rice and bean based, all carb-o-lishes, lol.

If you have a gluten issue, cutting carbs in general is not going to help you, because gluten can be found in things that are virtually carb free.

No I understand that, thanks.. I think thats just how I associate it cause thats where I get it the most since I don't eat a lot of processed foods, thanks, I will stick to the veggies and fruit and try and cut carbs to a certain extent, thanks again, you've been a big help

Aww.... well what you need to stay away from is the white stuff...white rice, pasta, and bread....all that white stuff has little or NO nutritional value....I tried it and i havent gone back to eating these whites foods....its not too hard...whole wheat products are the way to go

You can still get necessary carbohydrate without eating gluten...or...any grains for that matter. I guess you just have to determine what your carb needs actually are. If you are a runner, I wouldn't recommend going into any traditional low carb diet - 30g or less net carbs daily - but rather aim for 75-100g and see how you feel. Cut gluten, cut back on the carbs, introduce some dietary fat and protein to replace them and go from there.
