Strenght training - where to start?

I used to exercise regularly at the gym until a few months ago, and now I want to start again to motivate me.
I'm not a fitness genius or anything, but cardio is pretty simple and I know the basic variety of machines & exercises.
Strenght, though-- NO CLUE!
As I said, I'm not an experienced exerciser. I used to ask a lot of advice to the trainers there.
I'm sure I'll ask for help now, as well, but I'd like not to be as clueless to begin with as I was.
Ya know, to know what the eff I'm doing
So, what exactly is strenght training? How would I do it at the gym?
