I can't find the article I wanted to cite, but basically:

Any time your intake is less than your output, your metabolism takes a hit because your body wants to make them match. This should be no more than like 20%. In extreme cases, it is possible that you can be eating a very low calorie amount and maintaining because your body has adapted to use so little energy. The solution is to increase calories slowly, like 100/week until you are close to what calculators say your maintenance should be. During this time, you probably will put on some weight. When you find a level where you are maintaining, you know your TDEE and you can cut calories by a modest amount from there.
