The Torso Shot

I know I'm going to take heat, but I'm kinda curious. What is up with the torso shot? Where is your head? People used to say, 'my eyes are up here' now...what? Your eyes don't matter? I'm not always happy with my head, my hair is unruly and such, but I don't take pictures of just my torso instead. I just picture the photo albums...and here is little Billy's torso, isn't it cute?

I always assumed it's to show off the progress on the belly area, since that's one of the toughest places to lose...
  • It's the way the site posts the photos. I cropped my shot to show whole body, including head. When it shows up in my posts, my head is missing. When I look at my profile, the whole pic is there. ~shrug~

But, we can still see the progress without being distracted by the head. I like to see the smile on the faces and the healthy glow too,not just shoulders down. Facial changes can be really dramatic too.

You can't show as much definition which is also the toughest group of muscles to visually define, especially in women. especially in women who've had kids.

I've got two children, and can still recall a day I was over 200. So I am quite proud of my torso. My face, is just a face.

The forums are public. You can log out of MFP and search for them on Google. Maybe some people don't want to necessarily be identified and have their scantily clad bodies show up as pictures at the work place but still want the kudos and support that they receive here? If I have progress pics to post, I'll probably post torso shots for that reason. ;)

Your torso is gorgeous, you should be proud and I'm sure your face is more than 'just a face' too.

Same here. Full body shot but MFP only shows neck down.

I like what you're getting at. If we were so fed up with ourselves at one point to demand better, then why do we discount our other qualities? If the point here is to be more wholesome then we need to love our WHOLE self. Yes, I agree that the torso shot is probably to show off progress, but I would be loathe to see people go from hating one part of themselves to another.

Yeah, that's honestly also part of the reason I'm not a fan of putting face pics up too often. People are weirdos. I usually just keep them in my profile..
    Oh and thank you. :)

So torso shots on a fitness website doesn't make sense? Cool.

What is up with the torso shot?

Because that is where the vitals are. A head shot is hard to pull off and unethical.

    We are talking hunting right?

i love the people that are like "i don't need half naked shots of peoples bodies show up on my computer at work!!" lol. if you are at work, then why are you on the forums?? i can understand getting on to log your food, but to browse the forums??

and then the ones that are like "my kids see it!!" well, its just the human body. don't hide it or make it a shameful thing for your kids. that is how kids, imo, get a confused view about the human body and sexuality.

I don't put my face up for privacy reasons. Just consider me a random torso on the internet. If my friends want a pic of my face, I will be more than happy to send one.

Some people want to show their progress but don't want pictures revealing that much of themselves floating around the internet because of certain jobs they have. q

Look.....LOOK I say! At my glistening, chiseled abs that I worked hours upon hours to hone to perfection! My face doesn't matter, but you can't put a bag over my torso.

All kidding aside, I like the ab shots, especially on the ladies. There are some nice shots of people who look great in the midsection. I suspect it is an area of concern for a lot of people and they are proud to show off their results.

I don't blame folks for not putting their face on the net. No one wants to get stalked by some weirdo who is reminded of his first love (insert other irrational motivation) etc. I like all the different avatars - they say much about the poster.

That said, I suspect (based on the photography) that many of these photo avatars are fake and not actual shots of the person posting - more representing an ideal that person would want to attain physically themselves.

Regardless, those brave folks that do post pictures of themselves, my hat goes off to you. Seeing your progress is inspiring and encouraging. Many of you look absolutely amazing.

<---torso shot because I like the way my lean torso looks in pretty much everything. It shows my progress. I took my head off because I decided that I don't want my face all over the net.

Jeans look better when I'm lean.

    All of the above.

Sometimes it's the way the forum software crops the photo... you can't adjust the thumbnail view like you can on Facebook.

Sometimes it's because the person is damn proud of their progress and since the photos are quite small on here, even at full size, you wouldn't be able to see much definition if you included your head in the photo.

    Sometimes it's for privacy reasons.

And sometimes, the photo isn't of them. Usually, if someone's using someone else in a photo, it's for motivation and inspiration, but I have seen a few people who were using fitness model or celebrity photos and accepted compliments on their amazing abs.

I was disfigured in a horrible pencil sharpening accident. If I posted my face shot it would scar you for life.
