High heart rate and burning fat vs. muscle

Someone told me that if your heart rate is above a certain point, you will burn muscle instead of fat. Is this true? And if so, is it true for someone who has a lot of weight to lose?

No thats not true, you don't burn muscle but you actually MAKE muscle when your heart rate is above 80% of your max. What that means is that your cardiovascular system and respiratory system are benefiting tremendously from your exercise, however your body is not burning stored fat as much as it would if you only stayed within 60-70% of your max heart rate, your basically performance training. There is a simple formula you can find to know your max heart rate and that is 220-your age, so for me, Im 31 and so my max is 189. So, in order for me to lose weight, I need to stay between 114-132.

no. but to explain it a little btr, at a lower heart rate, a higher percentage of the total calories burned will be fat. at a higher heart rate, when energy is needed quickly ,a higher percentage will be glycogen. your body doesnt want to use muscle for energy because it is not efficient.
