I am sure many of you already know of this story. It touched me very deeply as I KNOW what it is like to be overweight and have folks make cruel comments.
Here, a few years back, I asked a barkeep if I could use the bathroom. He comment, yes, it is over there, but not sure you will fit. ( some of the bathrooms in Italy are VERY small). BUT that is beside the point. That hurt, was like an arrow that he shot at me from out of no where. It was plain old meanness. Now, I was not the person I am today. If that happened today my take and RESPONSE would be quite different. My point is, I am glad that Ms. Livingston spoke out as she did. Statically, there is not a population more discriminated against than being overweight. And since this is not something you can hide, it is out there for all to judge and many times make cruel comments. Obesity also is NOT a choice as that email to Ms. Livingston said. It has more to do with what is between your eyebrows than what is on your plate. I KNOW! It is as much about psychology then nutrition. Do you think that ANYONE would CHOOSE to be obese? ( which I am too by charts in the docs office)
It boils down to us all treating folks with respect and not judging so harshly another persons life and appearance of choices. As she pointed out, that man did not know her, her family or ANYTHING about her!
Again, this touched me on SO many levels. I know what it is like to be obese, I know the commitment it takes to make the some changes to better my health. It is a journey and one that a person takes only WHEN they are ready to do so. You cannot BULLY anyone into being what you THINK they SHOULD be. Lets be nice to others and teach our children the same! Kids are sponges. If you call overweight, different color or different sexual orientated folks disparaging names around your kids, they hear it and mimic that though out their lives. STOP this NOW! Create, be and live an example of acceptance, love and allowance of differences.
