At the bottom of my pint of BRAND NEW strawberries was a nasty little moldy one. Of course I threw it away, but I kept the rest, as they looked fine. What would you have done?

I wish I would have thought of that. I need a moldy food arsenal. Launch the tomatoes!

same thing you did. I may even cut off the non-mouldy parts if possible.

I'm actually surprised if I don't find a moldy or smooshed strawberry in a carton. I just toss the damaged one and wash and enjoy the rest.

I would have thrown away the moldy one, and washed the rest in a bowl of cold water with a few tablespoons of vinegar, then rinsed them and let them dry before putting them back in the fridge..

If the bottom of the plastic container has one of those absorbent mats, throw it away and line the bottom with a clean paper towel.

Edited to add that anytime I use berries in a smoothie, I sort through and pick out the squishy ones to toss in the blender. It's a good use for them, and then the firm, perfect ones can be eaten as-is!

I just hated the idea of pitching the whole thing, especially as they're not in season and are a little more expensive. :ohwell: Thanks for all the input!
