Took a week off...still hurting.

After many many weeks of painful/tight hamstrings & shins hurting I decided to take a week off from exercising. My hamstrings don't hurt while doing nothing anymore, but they're still very tight and seem to seize up quickly if I use them. My shins now only hurt when I have to run through the house. (I have 3 boys.) I really wanna start back into my routine, but wanted to get some feedback. Going to a doctor right now is not an option cause we don't have insurance and I don't have the money anyways. Do you think it's okay to workout?

Have you tried doing a stretching routine? I have tight hamstrings (although not painful right now), and I was told to stretch very well, especially after workouts. I'm not a doctor, so I won't say whether you should start working out again. But if you do, take it easy and ease back into it. But I would definitely try to stretch.

Warm up dynamically (moving) for 5-10 minutes before each workout and cool down statically (holding the stretch) for at least 5 minutes after each workout.

Devote 1 day a week to a good 40 minute full body stretching routine, or take a yoga class.

    My tuppence worth ;)

I second the light warm up before working out, what does your workout consist of?

There are many reasons as to what could be occurring.

^^^This! Full body warm ups and stretching. Yoga is awesome. Also are you just doing the same type of exercise over and over again? Are you a runner? It's sounds like you've got some repetitive 'trauma' for lack of a better word going on. You might want to switch things up. Try something new. Brisk walking? And get a massage if you can! :flowerforyou:

I workout 5 days a week at home doing 45-60 minutes of Jillian Michaels dvd's. I started running 3 days a week in addition to my regular routine about 3 weeks ago...hence the shin problems. The hamstring stuff started probably 2-3 months ago though. My rest days are split up...Wednesday & Sunday. Should I put them together?

I love Jillian! But her intensive of work outs along with running can be very repetitive on the joints. Especially done back to back...OUCH! You might want to scale back a bit. Sub in some brisk walking or a treadmill or elliptical on one of the days. It's ok to have one or two days of 'lite' cardio....the cardio police won't come and cart you away. We don't need to be so harsh with our bodies....excessive pain that is not going away is a sign that it's too much. And variety can do a body good. Yoga, strength train, bike, hike, swim.

Lol...cardio police...I think that would be me. Its so hard to scale back or to not train hard on all my workout days. I feel like a failure if I don't give every workout my all. I know in my head that you'rw probably right though. On days that I run I usually do the regular video workout in the morning and then run in the evening so it's not back to back. I think I would die if I did that. I do have access to some good hiking trails so I could add that in place of my regular DVD on Saturdays.
