why do we base our caloric intake on a 24 hour period?

If I am supposed to eat 8,400 calories in a week does it matter in what form I get them? Some days, if I haven't really worked out I can't eat more than 1000 cals, but on the days I work out harder I tend to want to eat more say 1400-1500 cals. I count my calories but really only eat when I am hungry. Some times I have to make myself so I can met my 1200 cal a day quota and then end up not feeling well. Am I hurting my metabolism by being so wishy washy on my daily caloric intake?

No, eating more on the days you work-out is good for, your Net for the day should be 1200, if thats where your goals are set.0
