Wanting to lose 20lbs and need opinions

I need to lose more than 20lbs but this is the start of me setting 'mini goals' as I have never done so in the past and end up losing motivation after a couple of weeks! i always look at the bigger picture with the bigger weight loss number and end up losing the plot! SO my question is to you....If i lose 20lbs am I expected to go down a dress size? The reason I ask is I'm going to a wedding at the start of December and I would like to lose the 20lbs by then! I keep seeing really nice dresses in the end of Autumn/Fall sales and I obviously will need a dress that will fit me post 20lb weight loss but as extra motivation I kinda want to buy it now and have it hanging up so it's even more motivation to do it! It's all new season stuff coming into the shops and I really don't want to buy something really expensive (damn my taste for the good things in life) because I hope to never fit into it again after the wedding as I will be hopefully losing around another 50lbs after all this! in the past I would buy a dress for an event like this and would maybe get 2 or 3 wears out of it! but NO NOT THIS TIME! haha!

another reason I'm asking is because I've already lost 15lbs and I don't really see a huge difference in my clothes! some tshirts and shirts I have are more loose fitting but I'm not seeing a huge difference off my hips and thighs...except for my underwear constantly falling down under my jeans (sorry if to much info haha)

I know it's impossible for anyone really to know but it's just a shot in the dark to see if anyone maybe thinks its worth buying 1 or 2 sizes down! of im working in UK sizes here! I really range from 14-18 at the minute (top and bottom)! i'm of a curvy hourglass shape although I do see a slight shrink in me all over!

This whole post probably seems a bit stupid but any help would be great (: (:

  • I'm not familiar with UK sizes so I'm not sure if this information will translate, but I noticed when I was losing that the US double digit sizes 12 - 18 seemed to have a lot more 'wiggle' room (no pun intended!). I could lose 10-15lbs and they would still generally fit. When I got into US sizes 6-8, only a 5lb variance would make a difference.

My advice on your dress purchase - be careful buying much smaller than fits now. I am sure you will be successful on your loss, but on your journey you may lose a little more from one place than another until it all catches up. It will be difficult to get the "right" fit by guessing what your body composition will be. If you find the 'perfect one' during the fall sales, get one that fits but can be easily tailored as you lose.

Maybe a new dress for the event (even though it is a one time might not wear again) can be your reward for doing awesome!

I know what you mean by not seing much difference.I've nearly lost a stone since the beginning of Sept. And I'm still firmly a.UK size 16.

I think 20 by the startf December is pushing it too much. Sorry to rain on your hopes. Try losing a stone. You will feel better for the loss. And tone up as much as possible to feel confident in your lovely new dress.

I think it depends on your start and end weight, as well as your body shape. I lost 20 pounds and went from a US size 10 to a size 4 or 6. I had no idea I would get down to such a small size based only on 20 pounds.

I would caution you not to buy the smaller sizes now. I know the deals are better, but wait until it gets closer tp get a better feel for how your body is shaping up. In July I bought a bunch of shorts in smaller sizes for a September Florida vacation, just guessing at what size I would be by then and knowing I wouldn't be able to find shorts anywhere in September, and guess what? By the time I needed to wear them, they were all too big. It's so hard to know where and how the weight will fall off.
