Winter running in the city

I'm moving to Toronto next month and will be able to run to work (4.5km and there are showers at work :D) But I'm not used to running in a busy city (currently run in suberbs) nor in the winter (before the sidewalks are clear).

Does anyone have any tips, safety, gear that sort of thing? I'm also going to need to get a backpack for clothes and my lunch...

Thanks!
