What's the big deal about nuts especially over bread?

I do not understand why nuts are such a big deal and suppose to be healthy.
I think they provide too much fat and calories to be worth the protein and other stuff.
I have seen food journals where they eat almond butter plain and complain they are hungry.
Bread has the same calories and protein with fiber and is far more filling what is so wrong with bread?
I understand if you can not have gluten but nowadays there are a lot of gluten free bread that is good.
I do not buy into the low carb thing either. It is low calories with protein and fiber and fluids.
Most people who have sworn by low carbs have actually cut calories which amounts to weight loss.
Also too much protein with not enough fiber and fluids will make you constipated.

I have never had gluten free bread that did not taste like *kitten*. Eat what you want. If it fits with your desired diet, go for it.

Nuts are good because of the healthy fats they contain, as well as being low in sugars...

Wait. Are we thinking about the same kind of "nuts"?
  • Hmm, because bread is full of CARBS that's why it fills you up.

Not sure what the "big deal" is, but to me, nuts taste way better than bread and keep me full...they're healthy fats/protein in small amounts.

    To each their own.

Edited to add, I don't eat "low carb," I just don't really like bread.

My lunch today was a peanut butter & banana sandwich... so I think I covered nuts, carbs, protein, fat, fruit, etc. I'd add lettuce for a veggie but it doesn't really go with the overall flavor.

Fat and protein will satiate you better than carbs.

Yep, I rather eat a pack of nuts than a piece of bread any day. GAG.

But if you go over your calories by eating nuts and/or are still hungry are they worth it?

Fat and calories are not bad when they keep you full for a long period of time.

    Have you tried gargling them?
  • I kind of agree with you. I don't see what the big deal about nuts is, they don't satisfy me. I'd much rather have some whole wheat toast over nuts any day. I guess to each their own.

I see what you mean. It's a pretty big calorie investment to add nuts, and they're not very filling.
A good whole grain bread can be much more filling for less calorie investment. I don't buy into the whole "grains are the evil" train of thought, either. If our paleo ancestors could have had bread available to them, they would have eaten it.

Of course sprinkling bread across my fruit and yogurt or my oatmeal is nowhere near as good as nuts, which I limit to 1 tablespoon so as not to burn through my calorie budget too fast.

You're right about nuts not being great for protein. Any form of meat will do much better. You go for nuts for a healthy source of fat, which is also part of a healthy diet. As for bread, yes there's the gluten component for those that don't have the tolerance for it, but there's also just a bunch of junk added to bread that is better avoided; high fructose corn syrup, and all the other additives and preservatives they put in there. I only buy bread from a local bakery that doesn't throw in all the crap that just tastes better than anything I've ever bought that's commercially produced.

Well you could have done peanut butter & banana sandwich and subbed a lettuce wrap for the bread. I mean, it sounds yummy to me

...to the OP - nuts are high in potassium, biotin, magnesium, fiber, good fats. There are many reasons to eat nuts. You need fat - so....you definitely don't need breads or grains, though, nutrition-wise.

But if you go over your calories by eating nuts and/or are still hungry are they worth it?

This is completely dependent on someone's eating habits and goals...everybody's different.

I don't get too upset over going over my calories on occasion...I also just really don't worry about the overall effect of making a choice of "nuts vs. bread."
  • Nuts are a natural source for good fats. Bread is a man-made processed source for carbs. Carbs are not your enemy, but I would rather get the bulk of my carbs from natural sources like vegetables and fruits.

Fat is not the evil the 90s would like it to be. Nuts are full of HEALTHY fats.

I think it depends on the individual's body. I tried the low carb thing back when in high school when I was playing rugby. As it turns out with out enough complex carbs I end up a starving, shaky mess. And when I'm a starving shaky mess? No amount of nuts or lean protein seems to fix it. Give me a bowl of oatmeal or a nice slice of whole grain bread and Bob's your Uncle =0) Everyone is different.
  • huh? please educate yourself on the various KINDS OF FAT and the benefits of having them in your diet. Nuts are high in fat but guess what?? Your body needs fat for proper functioning.

Some people metabolise protein and fats much better than they metabolise carbs. Others are the opposite. In other words, some people get great results eating high carb diets, others get great results eating low carb diets. It takes time (and by time I mean months to years) to figure out which boat you are in. Just do what works for you and forget what others do if you are that concerned.

I'm confused....are you trying to talk yourself into eating them, or others out of it?

If they don't do it for you, just find something else that does...very simple (there's no 'one size fits all' diet here)

Healthy fats. A handful of nuts is a lot better for you than a handful of potato chips. It's all in what they're made up of and how the body digests and stores them. It's like saying you shouldn't eat fruit because it's high in sugar. So should I eat potato chips and candy bars instead?
