Abdominal Pain and the Elliptical Machine...

How is that I'm straining the upper part of my abdominal muscles (right near the rib cage) when I use the elliptical. What am I doing wrong?...I don't have this issue when I jog on the treadmill....

You're actually straining the muscles? Or they are just sore? There's a big difference. If they're just sore it should go away with some time.

Maybe try adjusting your grip on the vertical bars? Higher or lower? See if that makes a difference? Maybe you're reaching too far with the arms or something. I have no idea, never felt anything in my abs from the elliptical and I go pretty hard.

I'm hoping they are not strained......It is just in one tiny area, so that is what is so weird about it....I will try and adjust my grips and such! Thanks...

I used to get cramping in my side EVERY time I went on the elliptical, but I have no idea why that was. I just tried to work through it, until one day I injured my knee really bad on it and haven't been on one since.

Wish I had an answer for you other than to say that sounds the same as what I had.

Trust me, if you strained them you'd know, or you'll know very soon. I just went through it and it was h-o-r-r-i-b-l-e. Took two weeks to get back to normal and they are still iffy. The strain in my abs crept up on me over a 2-3 day period. Started out a little sore, like you're describing and by day three I could barely walk. Day four and I was physically ill from the pain and at the doctor.

So, it's not likely that you've strained them, but you should be careful. You want to be very aware of the pain and don't push it until you know it isn't serious. If you are noticing this repeating itself it may be best to pick another machine. Or, to at least try and adjust your position on the Elliptical as well as the amount of time you spend on it.

I just had this happen to me this week as well! It was on the front of my rib cage ( sorry if this offends anyone- but just under my breast) I asked the trainers in the gym and they reassured me that I was sore and it should subside in a few days.

    I don't know if this is related...buuuuttt....

I have ALWAYS gotten a sharp, lingering pain on my right side right below my ribs. It never happened when I exercised on an elliptical, but it never fails to happen when I'm outside or on a treadmill. I have had my gallbladder checked for stones and been to the doctor multiple times...so far, nothing.

Personally, I'm assuming that it's -how- I'm running and that my insides just "aren't used to it". It at least gives me the illusion that it'll get better as I get more fit. Another thing that can affect abdominal pain when doing any sort of run, from what I understand, is your diet. I'm not quite sure....so I hope no one holds me to that! :blushing:

I was taught this in P.E. in elementary school...it's probably lactic acidosis. It doesn't happen to me very often anymore, but it did when I first started working out vigorously...

That sounds like a "stitch." I mostly get it while while running, which i dont do much of anymore. Google "runner's stitch."
