I've read a lot of mixed reviews about this product but haven't come in contact with anyone that has actually used it.

I ended up buying one and I'm waiting for delivery, but it would be good to know what experience for better or worse.

I'll post results in a couple weeks with my initial reviews.

Thanks!

I saw a guy wearing one at the gym the other day, I didn't know what it was. We assumed (correctly) it was some sort of training thing.

When I was at the University of Minnesota, the cross country team used to train using oxygen masks and tanks. They stopped after a little bit. I am not sure why, but I would guess that if their improvement was dramatic they would have stuck with it.
I believe that with the bicyclists who train at altitude, the advantage is in your red blood cells, not in any change in lung function. It is why they blood dope too. My understanding is that the body adjusts, and that it adjusts fast, so that the effect only lasts a few days after you return to a lower elevation. And, I don't know if you will get the benefit if you are only putting the mask on to train, and then living the rest of your day at the lower elevation.
Somebody correct me if I am wrong.
