Extra calories needed in winter when it's cold ?

Hi all
It's cold here today and forecast for tomorrow. With winter drawing in and temperatures sure to drop even lower do we need extra calories to keep warm ? My other half is really good with nutrition, qualified personal trainer and he swears we need some extra calories in winter ! He says that we are similar to some animals and that it will help to keep me warm. I'm not in great health and do feel cold most of the time.
Your thoughts?

I tend to eat less and lose weight, but I am very active in summer and always on the go (not always making healthy food choices).
  • i would think that more calories equals more fat stores, which would be what would keep you warm

You burn a few extra calories shivering but no need for extra.

I lose easier in winter. I think because I drink a ton of tea all day so I feel fuller. Haha Summer is on the go and more alcohol things (pool, beach, camping, etc.)

In theory, your body does use more calories to keep your body warm when the weather is cold. However, the amount of energy your body uses is negligible. One exception is that shivering will burn a decent amount of calories, but being that cold jsut isn't worth it to me, and I don't even know how you would begin to calculate the calories you burnt.

So my answer: Yeah, it burns a couple calories, but not enough to count

When it snows I eat pie so I don't go into starvation mode.

I like this course of action. It makes a lot of sense to me.
  • You body does burn more calories when you are cold enough that your shivering, it expends the energy to try and warm you up. That said, I don't think it's enough of a difference to warrant a significant increase in calories, if anything take advantage of the help!
If getting cold is a problem for you layer up and eat lots of soup, thats my winter go to plan.
Hot tea and a range of amazing soup - oh and a huge silly looking fleace jumper but lets not mention that.
People tend to eat more calories over winter as is because your body tries to gain fat reserves to keep you warm and you crave the extra food.

I have read that it takes more calories to keep warm then it takes to cool off. So when winter comes I hate being cold, I just remember I am most likely burning more calories in winter than summer.
