Cha cha cha CHIA seeds

So I have been hearing a lot of great things about chia seeds (yes as in the Chia pet chia seeds). The list of pros seems to be pretty great! Soak the seeds and then they create a gel that you can eat. Serving size is about one TBS.

So does anyone here eat them? Have you noticed more energy etc? What do you think?!

Thanks!

I like them. I haven't found them to have any magical properties, but I think they are a healthy food.
I put them in my green smoothies mostly. I love the texture after they soak in the smoothie -- kind of like that bubble tea stuff if you ever had it.

I'm trying a pumpkin chia pudding recipe tomorrow I think.
  • I like chia seeds and there are plenty of pros to including them. I haven't noticed changes in my energy that I would attribute to them alone.
I like to add them to smoothies too, and sometimes my porridge. They are also good in salads.
The only thing I dont like about them is that they are higher in calories then assumed they where.

I have them every day, I mix them into my smoothie. They have 9-times the Omega 3 than salmon; they keep you hydrated; they are wonderful. They take a bit getting used to, you can't chew them, you need to swallow them. We buy them online, and black seeds supposedly are a bit nutritious than the white.

I put them in overnight oatmeal. Again, nothing magical but they are a great source of omegas and they are filling.

I'd like to use them more but they are high in calories for such a small amount.

Do they make you feel fuller? Are they better for you than flax seeds?

Too bad ALA conversion to EPA/DHA in humans is terrible

I put mine in overnight oats too! Delicious and gives it a little oomph. I have also heard of people making puddings and smoothies. I find that chia seeds will help keep my hunger at bay until lunch. I do not seem to need a snack. They seem harmless enough! Enjoy!
  • I use them in my oatmeal to bulk it up while using less oats. I also mix them into my yogurt the night before. yogurt + almond milk + chia seeds makes a great consistency too! It still freaks me out knowing that they are from chia pets and I eat them, though.

They are a complete protein so a good option if you are trying to up your protein grams.

    It's ok, they're harvested humanely.

Seriously, I don't see that they're any better than flax seeds, except you don't have to grind them - but at $2/lb for flax and $10/lb for chia, to me, there's really no contest.

Chia is an ancient seed that has more omega 3 and dietry fibre than any other food from nature. Its very dificult to grow, mine come from the kimberley australia, 15 degrees south the equator, apparently it requires specific humidity etc :)

They do expand a little in liquid. They are medium for me on the fullness scale per calorie. 100 calories of chia is more filling to me than 100 calories of cracker, less filling than 100 calories of greek yogurt or 100 calories of steamed vegetable, for example. About the same as nuts or nut butter, I'd say.
