The Gum Theory

Some gums contain xylitol. Xylitol is toxic to some animals, in particular dogs (surge in insulin, drop in blood sugar, liver toxicity). So if you're going to chew it, please don't spit it out on the ground. And if you are going to spit it out on the ground, please don't do it in my yard.0

I have done it, but not much lately. The good news is that the constant chewing is working your jaw muscles, and therefore, it is increasing your NEAT and adding to your daily calorie burn. Sure, it's not super significant, but every little bit helps, right?0

I'm with your friend, it makes me hungrier! but if it's working for you, then go for it! just watch those calories, some packs have up to 10 calories a piece...0

As a way to keep me from eating constantly (I'm an emotional/boredom eater), I chew gum. I go through a pack maybe every 2-3 days, and it's working pretty well for me. Does anyone else do this, or am I just weird? I told my friend about it and she said that it just makes her even hungrier...
As long as your gum doesn't contain artificial sweeteners you're fine, but if it does you're asking for all sorts of problems
Ermegherd - I just checked, mine has aspartame
just don't swallow
That's the first time I have heard that from a guy
Hehe. I see what you did there...0 -

Huh! I didn't even consider the fact that gum has calories!0 -
You already have something in your mouth. Your mind says nothing else needs to be there.
Also chewing creates saliva so you don't feel as thirsty. Which is said to be a reason a lot of people eat.
The chewing response is being satisfied. Some researchers hypothesize that the soft fast foods
we eat so much of don't give us the chewing satisfaction our bodies want. So we eat more to get it.
Who knows? If gum works, do it.0 -

I've been doing it and it helps a lot. I can use gum to last an extra hour before eating !!:flowerforyou: :indifferent: :glasses:0

It doesn't work for me... I can't even buy gum because I will easily go through a pack or two in a day.0

I like a piece of Extra Dessert Delights after dinner in place of sweets.I love the Key lime and the mint chocolate chip flavors. Also, it's very hard to nibble when you gum in your mouth.0

Peppermint does indeed suppress the appetite. My best friend deals with Essential Oils and one of the best ways to suppress your "hungry cause I'm bored" hunger is to put some peppermint oil on a toothpick (or whatever) and suck on it for a bit.
Hmm, I did not know that. Thanks for the tip!
Interesting... I'm going to have to try this one.
Make sure you get a good quality, food grade oil. It's pricey ($25-$30 for a 25mL bottle) but it's worth it. You can use it for all kinds of other things, like helping with irrelgularity, headaches, and such. I suggest doing some research!!0
