Knee pain - when should I be worried?

I'm on week 7 of C25K and have had no problems with my knees. I even participated in a 7k race a couple of weeks ago, and while my thighs and calves ached after that, there was no pain in the knees. I do a little dynamic stretching before and static stretching after a run. Two days ago I felt pain in my knees and the front of my legs while running, and the pain lasted the whole day after that. There was also a little swelling of the right knee. Today there was a dull pain in my right knee within a couple of minutes of running, but I pushed on and it went away in a few minutes.
When should I be concerned about putting too much strain on my knees? And what helps? (Do knee braces do anything?)
Thanks for any input, I appreciate it.

Are you heel striking?
Switching to a forefoot or midfoot strike greatly diminishes the strain on the knees.0 -
Possible runner's knee. They make a little band for that.
Also don't neglect rolling your IT band.0 -
