Back in August I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease. Any one that Has a Thyroid Issue (not so much Hyperthyroid) will tell you how hard it is to lose weight. . . Will I was wondering if any of you have the Disease and if you could give me any tips. I have done my research but nothing is helping me lose weight. I am on a Thyroid Hormone now and I feel wonderful but this weight thing is really starting to bug me!
For those that don't know what the Disease is :
Hashimoto's disease, also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, your immune system attacks your thyroid gland. The resulting inflammation often leads to an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism). Hashimoto's disease is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States. It primarily affects middle-aged women, but also can occur in men and women of any age and in children.

Never crossed my mind that I had a thyroid issue until my dad told me that he was diagnosed. THAT was what started my weight loss.
I don't have Hashimoto's though. Currently on 50mcg of Synthroid daily. As you can see by my ticker, I'm losing weight just fine. I'm doing a ketogenic diet (very low carb, high fat, moderate protein) and it's working great. I plan on eating like this for the rest of my life since I just feel better eating plenty of veggies and keeping fresh food around.
Biggest help was getting my meds stable. I realized a month ago how much they helped when I forgot to take them during the week hurricane Isaac hit my area. I spaced out and forgot to take them for a few days, and BOY did that set my weight loss back two weeks. Then came the brain fog, lack of energy, etc.
ETA: One more bit of advice. Be patient with yourself and your weight loss. It's not going to be easy, it just gets easier to do as you form good habits. If the scale stalls, don't freak if you're keeping up with your new lifestyle. It'll eventually kick back in gear.
Best of luck to you. I've been on my meds for three years now, and I've honestly never felt better.0 -
Hi,
I also have Hashimto's. It was diagnosed years ago. Yes, for people with this disease the weight comes off incredibly slowly but it will come off with patience and persistence. Trial and error, carrying out my own research and going to an endocrinologist (not my family doc) have helped control the hypo levels so that my blood tests hover around 1 iu. That is where I feel most normal. I take my thyroid medication religiously--you need to or otherwise it hampers your gains greatly. If you are going to maintain with meds (most do) then consider the time you take your meds and be careful about how you take them. You really need to avoid food intake when you take the medication for maximum absorption. A lot of research has been done on this.
I've battled with my weight, like many on this forum, for many years with the exception that unlike many on here, I've had this awful disease to contend with. At my highest (pregnancy) the Hashimoto's was discovered and I was just shy over 200. Over time, I lost 30 more pounds (170 was around where I maintained). I joined MFP when the scales would not budge again and now I am down to 132. MY UGW is 125 although people now tell me I am too skinny for my frame. I am 5'3.
I lost the majority of the weight restricting calories (at the MFP preset level of 1200) and riding a recumbent bicycle every night for about 30-40 minutes. About a month ago I reevaluated my numbers (body fat has gone down incredibly…YAH) and upped my calories. Just the other day, I completed the full 30 day shred program and have started on the Ripped in 30 alternating with Jillian's Killer Abs series. I am in the best shape of my life and have muscles and toned body parts (including a pretty flat stomach) that I am very proud of. I’ve almost become addicted to the exercise and weigh management now. I expect that is probably a common occurrence with people who lose significant amounts of weight?
I guess what I am trying to say is that weight loss with Hashimoto’s/hypothyroidism is do-able, very do-able. I’ve done it and I am sure many others have as well. It may take a bit longer and require a bit more stamina on our part, but the results, your health and your overall outlook when you’ve beaten the weigh monster are sooooo worth it.0 -
Once your thyroid levels are stable and at a true normal (not the typical normal range that says TSH under 6 is good LOL...closer to 1 is best), you should be able to lose weight just fine. Some people need T3 in addition to T4 supplementation too.
You might lose on the slower side, but if you make the effort you should definitely be able to lose weight. If you're levels are good and you're not losing, it's likely NOT the thyroid issue that is the problem.
ETA: And yes, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's about 9 years ago.0 -
