Help me out here

I'm having trouble staying motivated to lose weight. The reason I'm having trouble is because with my weight being what it is, exercise is difficult on my joints. During the first week, I went through the normal soreness that accompanies a week's worth of exercise. However, with my blood disorder (hemophilia) injuries are magnified because I take longer to heal. Just recently, I injured my elbow doing push-ups with my niece and ended up having fluid in my elbow. I'm growing tired of starting, stopping, and having to start over because of injuries. I'm about to quit all together but hopefully I can get some motivation tips and accountability from this post. If you read this, thanks and I'll respond.

I concur. This site is full of people with disabilities that require they adjust their exercise guidelines. You should just focus on eating your recommended calories and walking/jogging. An hour walk will do you wonders. Maybe once you drop more weight, the stress on your joints will be less and you can add in strength training as well.0

If you're having trouble staying motivated, think back to what brought you to MFP in the first place. You obviously have motivation or you wouldn't be here. So maybe you just need some guidance on where to start. You don't have to exhaust or injure yourself to reach your goal. I started out only logging my food, every bite, every day. By staying at or below my calorie goal I lost over 20 lbs in under 3 months without dedicated exercise. I've just recently started incorporating workouts but slowly because of a back injury. Walking is a good way to start. It's low impact and you have complete control of how long and how far you walk. As you start to see progress, that will further motivate you to do more. You can do it! :flowerforyou:0

Do what you can with exercise and work with your doctor. But for weight loss all that matters is a calorie deficit. Nothing else matters for fat loss. Exercise is only to make your lean body mass pretty. Of course you burn calories when you exercise, but it's not significant compared to your calorie intake.
Work with your doctor on what you can do. But I encourage you to do what you can possibly with resistance bands or something. A physical therapist can probably help you with what exercises are good for you with your issues. Resistance training is important because your bones will deteriorate as you get older. I know you can't do what I have done, but I'm saying this to prove a scientific point; I recently had my DXA scan done and at 51.5 years of age I have the bone density of a super athletic 30 year old. That is a direct result of lifting for over 30 years. Now if that is not scientific proof that lifting weights keeps you younger I don't know what is! Also I believe it is why most people think I look much younger than I really am.
Because of this I don't have to worry about osteoporosis. If you wait until you are older and your bones start to deteriorate it's a bit too late, you can't get back what you lost, you can only start a resistance routine that will prevent further damage.
So work with your doctor and a physical therapist to find what you can do to work around those issues.
I have issues as well with my age. I have a cyst smack in the middle of a hip joint and it has worn the cartilage thin and I also have arthritis in both hips (it does not compare to your issues), but my hips do hurt significantly and I have to make some workarounds. I have tendinitis I have to workaround at times. We all have something and have to do the best we can with our given circumstances. Life is not fair to anyone. If you think anyone has it easier then they probably have some other stress in their life you don't know about. We don't all tell everyone our luggage, but we all have it.
Anyway, I hope to encourage you to find your way. I tell my success story here and there might be a tidbit of something I learned that would be useful to you, or maybe not but here is my story ===> http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/740340-i-lost-60-lbs-at-age-51-anyone-can-any-workout0 -
My total weight loss goal is also 120lbs. When I first started, I could only do 20 minutes on the treadmill at 2.5 mph, 3 days a week. Every few days I pushed myself in one way or another, whether it was speed or distance. I added in 20 minutes of floor exercises & just kept building from there as time went by. Now I'm doing things I've always said I would "never" be able to do. And that makes me want to do even more! Listen to your body. Push your body but don't overdue it. That will only set you back. Be patient with yourself but don't allow yourself to give up. You'll know when its time to step it up a notch. Set up a realistic workout schedule & eating plan, with very specific goals, and stick to it. You can change it as needed but it will serve as a guide & a motivator. Take your body measurements monthly. This will also motivate you. Go to the library & check out either, or both, New Rules Of Lifting, The Biggest Loser. They're both filled with excellent information to help you all your journey, take the guesswork out of it, and have pictures of the exercises. Then you can decide if you want to buy the book/books. My guess is you will. Best of luck to you. You CAN do this!0
