What is your workout wear?

Someone posted this on a forum on another website, and it made me curious about what people wore in "our" little community here.

For me, it's nothing I would consider extravagant, but I do believe in having the right tools for the job, so I don't skimp on what I consider to be the essentials.

I am a big fan of "technical fabrics"--fabrics that do not absorb moisture and so they remain comfortable (and retain their heat insulating capability) even when wet. I became very adamant about this during my outdoor running days, as it made a HUGE difference. I am not the most sweaty guy in world, but I would say I am in the 90th percentile, so, for me moisture management is a must.

So, right now I am wearing a lot of Under Armour Heat Gear loose-fit Tshirts (they had a good pre-Xmas sale) and some related stuff from Nike. Shorts are the same motley collection. I am a big fan of coolmax socks (various brands--my wife buys them as presents for me from REI). And rather than built in liners, I prefer compression shorts or boxerjocks, also from Under Armour.

These fabrics cost a little more $$ up front, but they wear forever and I just find them a lot more comfortable. Between sales, outlet stores and ebay, you can usually get them for $15-$20 per piece. I've been wearing some of my shirts and shorts for over 2 years and they aren't even starting to wear.

I use 2 pairs of shoes--Asics GL-2140 for running/cardio, Under Armour Proto Evade trainers for weight training and circuit workouts. I am curious how the UA shoes hold up--I have had them for about 2 mos now. I like the feel and performance a lot, but they don't seem particularly well made. I also got a new pair of weight lifting gloves for Christmas--Harbinger Training Grip gloves, which I love.

That and my Polar F11 and iPod nano and I'm good to go. What about you?

I had to laugh at this post -- all my friends and husband have been trying to get me to change what I wear to the gym. I wear a t shirt (whatever is clean, i have a drawer full of my husbands old tshirts so they are really big), a sweatshirt (which I start to exercise in and take it off as I warm up) the sweatshirt is literally 9 years old and frayed on the sleeve cuffs and bottom and a pair of blue yoga pants that I cut to just below the knee). I swear to you I look like a BAG LADY - oh and I wear a baseball cap too...
BUT my underneath is where I pay attention - my sports bra is a great one (a bit expensive but supportive when and where I need it), my Polar HRM, my ipod and my New Balance running shoes...
At the gym Im a mess - but my thinking is I dont want to look good at the gym I want to look good out of the gym.
hehehehe - its ok you can laugh at me too....

I wear fitted clothing: Sneakers, Lycra socks, stretch pants, cotton underwear, supportive sports bra and a fitted t-shirt or long-sleeve stretchy shirt. If I'm going to outside I wear fitted clothing that wicks the sweat. Not only is it more comfortable to move in clothing that is stretchy and close fitting, but it's safer and I feel more attractive in knowing I'm showing off my curves. Though I do this in my home gym... :blushing:

ractayjon, I'm with you! I make sure to wear a good bra and shoes; everything else is incidental. Old tees and cut-off sweats. But I can understand people who are working out differently wanting to wear different clothes depending on the purpose. When I go to my karate classes I wear a gi, even though it's not really the greatest fashion for round bodied people

I wouldn't laugh at all--it's smart to buy quality for the things that mean the most to you & your workouts--and to not waste $$ on things that aren't.

I think you have a great look--for someone who sweats as much as I do, old cotton castoffs unfortunately are not an option.

I wear sweat pants and a t-shirt... they are so comfi for me and of course my ball cap! I can't go to the gym with my hair flying in my face! I hate it! I look at girls who are all gussied up with make-up, hair and all that jazz and think... how are you comfortable? It would drive me crazy! Then to think that when they sweat their make up is running... it's not appealing to me! lol!

Other than my sweats... I have to have my iPod with my wide range of music!
  • I usually wear Danskin workout pants and a tank top if I am inside. I am not a fan of outdoors in the winter but in the summer I wear capris and a tank or TShirt. I also wear my new balance shoes.

I usually wear a sports bra with a tee shirt or a tank top with a sports bra built in. Work out capris (even though I hate capris) or workout pants. I pull the hair up in a pony tail or not at all since I've gotten new bangs.

I am so in agreement! Their clothes are great and you can wash and wear them like a million times!

In the gym I wear two sports bras, as its the only way I've found to be comfortable! Normally my nike cut offs and an adidas tshirt because that's what I've already got! When I was swimming regularly I had some swimming capri leggings under a suit with a support shelf, a large volume cap and my aqua sphere goggles.

and they're so comfy, they keep moisture away from your skin, their pants are reversable, and they're cute enough to wear outside of the gym. i wear mine like regular pants/leggings all the time!
  • RIght now, the only workout wardrobe staple that I have is my collection of sport bras lol I have 2 Adidas, and one Under Armour, and as long as I have one of those on, I am not too fussy about the rest of my gear. If I am working out outside (walking or running) then I do the layer thing...I have a pair of faded leggings (moisture wicking) that I will wear under my yoga pants and a similiar tank that I wear under whatever other layers I put on. I am in need fo buying some new work out clothes as mine are all stretched and faded and do not do anything to make me feel good about myself when I wear them. I am hitting up Lulu Lemon soon, and grabbing some more Under Armour gear :)

As most of the females have stated a good sports bra and my fave is Enell ! I wear sweat wicken clothes because I SWEAT and I mean sweat where I am soaked after some sessions even while wearing the moisture absorbent material! I live in the country but dress the same as hitting the gym or if attending my home Insanity or P90X workouts, I wear stylish, matching fitness wear! It makes me feel good while sweating! My shoes are always rotated or replaced on a regular basis and I have been known to wear baseball caps but always my hair is UP, I can not stand my hair flying in my face! If I have make-up already on, I do not go wipe it off but no I do not put it on to exercise and NEVER have I ever had running makeup NEVER! I see people with sweats on or baggy clothes and I think if that was me and at the end of my workout it would weigh 15 pounds dragging down my body! When people wear form fitting clothes (not skin tight) it is easier to move and they actually look slimmer or smaller don't you agree? But really I do not care what you wear as long as you are MOVING IT and are comfortable!!!

I started wearing tech fabrics in an effort to quit chaffing my thighs, yep, it's out there! Now I have a whole wardrobe, one for everyday, at least. I find that putting on my "workout" clothes gets me amped to get it done. After reading all of this I am going to have to check out Lulu lemon and enell!

Hey, anyone have a good tech fabric laundry soap they like? I have to use a fragrance free if possible. thx

I think I might break down and get one of those Enell bras. I can't stand it when my boobs move when I'm running. The bra I have right now is pretty decent but I'm curious about the Enell.

As far as the other stuff goes, I have a pair of after shock shorts that I have been wearing forever. They're comfy and cool. I get really hot when I work out so I could never wear sweats or cotton.

The top is usually some sort of wife beater.

the Lululemon stuff is super cute as well!

I actually find that my newest Adidas one, from their ClimaCool line (I think thats what its called), has better support than the UA....The UA definitly has more moisture wicking capabilites, but as for support, the Adidas is my fave.

I wear yoga type pants and a tank top with wide straps as I hate my bra showing. I do wear a good sports bra and I love my Asics. Usually I am working out first thing in the morning so I roll our of bed and put on my gym clothes. I only brush my hair if it is too wild. Other than that, they get me as I come.

I pretty much look the same for all workouts:

Nike running shorts w/the inner brief, usually w/the waistband rolled down once
    Moisture-wicking sports bra
hair in ponytail w/sweatband worn as a headband (& also a small "clippy" on top to hold back layers)
New Balance shoes & Thorlos socks

Lifting days, I wear lifting gloves. Most cardio days, I wear weighted gloves.

If at the gym (which is really only when I travel) I will wear a tech fabric shirt. Otherwise I prefer to workout in as little as possible. If doing an Insanity workout, I usually throw on an extra sports bra as well.

Oh & NEVER, EVER, NEVER do I have makeup on. EVER. or any jewelry. If outside to workout, I will wear sunscreen.
