wholemeal, wholewheat or wholegrain??

out of interst, what is the difference between the above? which should i be eating? my pasta is wholewheat but my bread is wholegrain??? or should it be wholemeal?

there are no "best" really. The "whole grain" media campaign is very successful. Somehow we have been led o believe that whole grains are some magical thing that will make us healthy and help us lose weight.
Eat for taste. Eat what you like to eat.
If you are concerned about health, IMO, you would limit grains entirely. You dont have to cut them out entirely but grains are something that can taste great but we do not need them and they are not "optimal" fuel.
Limit your pasta and bread. Make it a special occasion when you have bread or pasta and enjoy what you like. Dont eat grains (whole or otherwise) because you think they will make you healthy or lose weight. They won't.0 -

Sadly, some of it is just marketing tactics...
Otherwise proper 100% 'wholegrain' is the best for you, as it is the most unrefined flour, retaining its vitamins, and is normally made with a lot of seeds and nuts, making it lower G.I.
Wholemeal (wholewheat is just another term for it) can often be equal to white bread in terms of nutritional content and glycemic index. It is sometimes the same ingredients as white, just slightly altered to achieve a brown colour.

the reason i ask is because i am interested in upping my consumption of complex carbs in anticipation of an upcoming 100k hike - for which grains, as part of a complex carb diet, could be essential0

I agree with the bolded part. I started eating whole grain bread because its only 50 cals a slice. Now, I've grown to like it a lot and find anytime I eat white bread its so mushy and soggy. Eat what you like and just work it in your macros.0 -
Don't really know the difference. But wholegrains/wheat/meal foods are in theory slower digesting and give you a steady flow of energy. I only eat them now, and I feel that they do keep me full for longer.0

I am all for wholemeal, wheat and grains unlike some others. I think wholemeal and wholewheat are just two different terms for the same thing, whereas wholegrain has added seeds and nuts.
Just make sure that the ingredients say wholemeal or wholewheat flour, instead of wheat flour (for white bread) when you buy.0 -

Protein is essential for muscle growth. Carbs help provide energy to exercise. Your brain runs on sugar and fats, but your muscles run on protein. It really doesn't matter what type of flour is used to make the bread, it's still a complex carbohydrate, which means that it takes more time to convert it into glucose (sugar) that your body needs. And unless you have a medical condition, it doesn't make any difference in the long run. It makes a difference in the short run because if all your carbs were simple carbs (fruit) with no complex carbs (breads, pasta, most veggies) then you would get a big burst of energy that may not last and will likely make you feel hungry too soon. Personally, I like to include both simple *and* complex carbs along with fats and protein, at every meal. If I do this regularly, my overall energy level is through the roof, and my workouts are more effective.0 -
Wholemeal contains all of the parts of the grain, so wholemeal and wholewheat are the same if only wheat is used.0
