Squats - Front vs. Back

Over the summer, I began hitting squats again after a long break (months or years) and started off slow and light to get used to it again. Once I was able to stack on the weight, I was doing 5x10 with 225 and adding weight as the weeks went on. I found that my neck was starting to really hurt as a result, so I stopped. I thought about doing front squats, as I know this focuses more on the quads, but still allows me to keep it a compound movement vs. the leg press.
What are your thoughts on this?

Front squats are pretty good but you should also figure out why back squats hurt your neck. Bar too high?0

I don't think so.. I had it just above my shoulder blades. I squeezed them to keep it in place. I even tried a bar pad ( I know there are different opinions about that) and it still hurt.0 -

Bar sits on my traps...no pressure on neck at all.
Maybe it's resting too high up like someone mentioned.0 -
